The "Austrian Riviera" invites you...

Tour Map

Route

Tour profile/ Level 1-2:

The route leads mainly on well-maintained cycling paths very often directly along the lake shore. The eastern part is mainly flat and the western part is slight hilly. This cycling tour is also suitable for families with children over 14 years.

This tour leads along the Carinthia Lakes loop, a longer section along the road
as well as the strong ascent to the Weissensee is facilitated by a train and bus trasnfer.

Day 1: Villach

Individual arrival. The silence of the mountains, the gentle shores of the crystal-clear lakes, nature purely - in the heart of Carinthia the region around Villach reflects this whole variety. Already the Romans as the possibly first bathers appreciated relaxation and rest in these thermal baths and even Paracelsus enjoyed the curative effect of the thermal springs.

Day 2: Villach – Lake Millstatt round trip – Millstatt/Seeboden, approx. 30 km + train ride

In the morning you take the train to Lendorf near Spittal a.d. Drau. From there you cycle on secondary roads to Lake Millstatt, which is completely surrounded by a cycle path. You will discover the untouched south shore without any roads where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake in many places. Along the northern shore you cycle, partly directly along the lake, to the capital of the region, Millstatt am See. Already the Austrian emperor spent his holidays here, and many elegant villas from this era are still preserved.

Day 3: Millstatt/Seeboden – Lake Weissensee – Hermagor/Lake Presegger See/Tröpolach, approx 30 km + transfer

In the morning a transfer takes you up to the Weißensee. At the top there is time to enjoy the impressive natural surroundings of Lake Weissensee. Take a boat ride (ticket incl.), a short hike or take a bath. Take the boat to the starting point of the bike tour. Here, a short climb awaits you first, before descending along the dreamy Gitschtal valley to your stage destination.

Day 4: Hermagor/Lake Presegger/Tröpolach – Gailtal – Lake Faaker See, approx. 55 - 60 kmkm

Your cycle tour today takes you downhill throughout, along the Gailtal cycle path. The wide valley is unspoilt and the cycle path runs right through the natural landscape along the river. At the beginning of your cycle tour you will pass the Pressegger See lake. Like all Carinthian lakes, it is a bathing lake with warm temperatures. Part of the tour then leads before Villach at the foot of the majestic Dobratsch mountain through a nature reserve that was created in the course of a historic rock fall. Here, too, you cycle directly along the Gail River, which is wide and shallow at this point and used as a bathing spot by many nature lovers. The cycle path continues towards Lake Faak. It is the emerald among the Carinthian lakes, not very big, but very warm and turquoise like the Caribbean.

Day 5: Lake Faakersee – Lake Wörthersee – Klagenfurt, approx. 40 km

In the morning you start at Lake Faakersee and then cycle a short distance along the Drau towards Lake Wörthersee. Before Velden am Wörthersee, you turn off into the idyllic Keutschacher Seental. It lies parallel to Lake Wörthersee and captivates with several small charming lakes that lie along your route like a string of pearls. At the end is the provincial capital of Klagenfurt as a stage destination. the old town still has many buildings from the Renaissance and southern flair. Small bars and shops round off the ambience. Culture lovers should visit the Museum of Modern Art, those interested in history the newly designed Carinthia Museum. Those who prefer to look at things from above must climb the steps to the city parish tower.

Day 6: Klagenfurt/surroundings – Klopeiner Lake – Klagenfurt, approx. 50-65 km

The short tour to Lake Klopein takes you directly from Klagenfurt to southern Carinthia and back along the same route. The round tour is a little further but more rewarding. The tour heads south in the morning. Past the imposing pilgrimage church of Maria Rain, the route descends over the Ferlach power station to the Drau cycle path. Follow this to Tainach, where the tour then leads via Stein im Jauntal to Klopeiner See. It is one of the smaller lakes but is considered one of the warmest in Europe. You then return along the Völkermarkt reservoir and then along a railway accompanying path on a direct route to Klagenfurt.

Day 7: Klagenfurt – Villach, approx. 40 km

The first section today takes you along the northern shore of Lake Wörthersee, then this tour goes back along the Drau cycle path and past Lake Silbersee towards Villach, the starting point of your pleasure cycling tour.

Day 8: Villach

A nice experience in Kaernten, Austria

Our group enjoyed the week on bicycle in Kaernten, except for the quality of the bicycles, which were bad. The bicycles had not gone through any quality assurance before they were let out to us and we had several bad experiences during the week which ...
