    Carinthian lakes roundtrip

    The "Austrian Riviera" invites you...

    • Do you have a clue where there is the most sunshine in Austria? Yes, right, in the Carinthian lake area where the "Austrian Riviera" invites you to a beautiful cycle tour between sunshine, water, nature and southern feelings. Let your daily life behind you and enjoy the atmosphere of the Carinthian lakes.

The cultural aspect should also not be forgotten: majestetic castles and huge palaces, just like the dreamy villages and old cities want to be discovered by you. To say it in a nutshell: Discover the travelling by bike from a beautiful and relaxing view.

      Tour profile/ Level 1-2:

The changes between the river valleys and lakes, as well as cycling around the streets which are rich in traffic sometimes bring a little bit hilly routes with them. With "normal" fitness this bicycle trip can be mastered. You cycle on mostly flat asphalted cycle paths and country roads with only little traffic.

      Day 1: Villach

The silence of the mountains, the gentle shores of the crystal-clear lakes, nature purely - in the heart of Carinthia the region around Villach reflects this whole variety. Already the Romans as the possibly first bathers appreciated relaxation and rest in these thermal baths and even Paracelsus enjoyed the curative effect of the thermal springs.

Day 2: Lake Faak, approx. 50 km

Past "Warmbad Villach" you leave the town and cycle at the bottom of the Karawank Mountains eastwards to the first lake of your round trip, the turquoise-blue Lake Faak. The scenery of the lake is controlled by the Mittagskogel, a true rock giant. Wide-flat, vacant meadows and green forest stripes surround the lake and in the lake there lies a wooded island. After a peaceful break by the lake and/or a midday rest you start your return journey. After a slight uphill stretch you reach the grey-green milk shining Drau. The Drau cycle path - flat and very well developed - escorts you during the leisurely journey back to Villach.

Day 3: Lake Ossiach, approx. 45 km

You leave Villach along the sea brook and enjoy the view at the ruined castle Landskron. On clear days the ruined castle above Villach can bee seen, just as far beyond. The giant "bath tub" Lake Ossiach is eleven kilometres long and has (like almost all Carinthian lakes) drinking water quality. On the one hand the mountains and the clear, in summer up to 27 degrees warm wather of the lake, arouse enthusiasm. On the other hand the monastery from the 11th century with its splendid, late-baroque church attracts attention to itself. As the next the charming bathing resort Steindorf at Lake Ossiach lures. Just a short stop in Bodensdorf before the cycle of today’s round trip shuts again in Villach.

      Day 4: Villach – Klagenfurt, approx. 40 - 50 km

The start of your tour takes you several kilometres eastwards along the Drau cycle path, then through traditional Carinthian farming country. Next comes the bustling town of Velden on the Wörthersee. The clear, turquoise water of the Wörthersee and the hustle and bustle are an invitation to take a break in this town, much loved by celebrities. Your route continues through the picturesque rolling hills to the Keutschacher Seental, taking you past almost forgotten shrines, farmhouses colourfully decorated with flowers. The broad valley, the rolling hills and wooded mountains, four delightful lakes and in the distance the mountain range. The South is near! The Hafnersee, the Keutschacher See, the Baßgeigensee and the Rauschelesee all surround the spa resort of Keutschach. The Lendkanal, located on the east bank of the Wörthersee, leads you to Klagenfurt, the capital of the Federal state of Carinthia.
An alternative route to the Keutschacher Seental takes you along the north bank of the Wörthersee, via Velden, Pörtschach and Krumpendorf to Klagenfurt. (40 km)

Day 5: Klagenfurt – Lake Klopeiner, approx. 40 km

Klagenfurt, the “Wörthersee Rose” is famous for its delightful old town. Constructed by Italian master builders in the 16th and 17th centuries, its southern flair has been preserved for hundreds of years. Where once, according to legend, the Lindwurm lived, you can now wander at leisure through narrow lanes and alleys, and admire romantic arcade courtyards, churches and town palaces. After this culture break, it’s time to carry on with your cycle trip! Your journey continues past Ebenthal with its castle, Schloss Grafenstein (the arcade courtyard is well worth seeing) and on to the Völkermarkter reservoir. You are now only a short distance away from Carinthia’s warmest lake, the Klopeiner See. The shores of the lake are inviting: the surroundings are mostly wooded, here and there small white churches can be seen on the tops of the hills, to the south rise the Karawanken mountains and there is almost always blue sky and sunshine. There is plenty of time for a refreshing swim in the lake.

      Day 6: Lake Klopeiner - St. Veit, approx. 40 - 55 km

You cross the Drau for the last time and cycle through the rolling hills towards Maria Saal. Soon you will see the imposing twin towers of Carinthia’s most impressive fortified church, Maria Saal. The cycle path takes you past the Kärntner Herzogsstuhl (Ducal Throne of Carinthia). This has stood here for over a thousand years and is, so to speak, the “navel” of Carinthia. Here the historically significant Kärntner Zollfeld stretches as far as the eye can see. Hochosterwitz Castle: in the middle of the field there stands a 150 m high limestone cliff, with steep drops on all sides, upon which an impenetrable fortress was then constructed. (detour to Hochosterwitz Castle approx. 15 km). Numerous castles and fortresses in the surrounding area are a reminder of the significance of the former state capital St. Veit.

Day 7: St. Veit – Villach, approx. 60 km

St. Veit was for centuries the state capital and the seat of the Carinthian bishops. The town walls, the medieval main square, the magnificent Renaissance houses, beautiful arcade courtyards and many other historical monuments are a testimony to this era. You head westwards and continue your trip gently along the river Glan to Glanegg. The ruined fortress of Glanegg commands the valley and is visible from afar. The idyllically situated Maltschacher See, surrounded by rolling hills, invites you to take a swim. Feldkirchen is surrounded by wooded hills, romantic castles and venerable ruins. The cycle path along the river Glan takes you directly to the Ossiacher see and back to the starting point of your trip, Villach.
