Salzkammergut - Lake District / Deluxe

Palaces & manors at the foot of the Alps

Itinerary

Route

Country roads, cycling paths, field paths, terrain is hilly with some longer uphill stretches.

Welcome to Salzburg! Check into your elegant hotel and explore the city of Mozart on your own. Stroll down Getreidegasse, enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of Salzburger Nockerl or a Mozartkugel. There’s hardly a more stylish way to start your trip to Austria.

Today, your bike tour begins with Salzburg’s famous sights: Getreidegasse, Mozart’s Birthplace, Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey, the Felsenreitschule, and Residenzplatz. You may already be familiar with many of these from *The Sound of Music*. Afterward, you’ll cycle through the rolling countryside via Thalgau and along Lake Mondsee to St. Gilgen. A short boat ride will take you to St. Wolfgang, right to the legendary “Weisses Rössl” on Lake Wolfgang.

First, you’ll take a boat to Strobl. Passing through the imperial town of Bad Ischl and on through Bad Goisern, you’ll reach the shores of Lake Hallstatt. From there, you’ll glide by boat to Hallstatt, whose unique landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A highlight of any trip to Austria! Afterward, you’ll cycle along the Traun River back to Bad Ischl. This is where Emperor Franz Joseph and his beloved Sisi spent their summers. Time for a coffee and a taste of Austrian pastry culture.

Follow in the footsteps of the Habsburgs as you explore Bad Ischl, including the Kaiserpark and the Kaiservilla. The route then winds leisurely along the Traun River, passing through Ebensee on its way to Lake Traunsee. Turquoise-blue water, mountains, and charming lakeside towns make this day feel like an Austrian postcard idyll.

The route takes you through the idyllic Aurach Valley to Lake Attersee and Weyregg. A boat ride will take you to Unterach before you cycle along the northern shore of Lake Mondsee to Mondsee. The magnificent abbey basilica is not only worth seeing but is also famous from *The Sound of Music*. In the evening, why not enjoy a classic Wiener schnitzel or a cold Austrian beer?

From Mondsee, you’ll cycle across the Irrsee to the idyllic Trumer Seenland. Gentle hills, small villages, and sparkling lakes accompany you on your way to Mattsee. Here, Austria shows its laid-back side, with plenty of nature, regional cuisine, and a cozy “G’spritzten” to round out the day.

Your final cycling leg takes you back to Salzburg. Riding along the Salzach River, you’ll arrive once again in the city of Mozart. Along the way, you’ll pass Leopoldskron Palace and Hellbrunn – two more locations featured in *The Sound of Music*. Back in Salzburg, it’s time to take another stroll through the Old Town, enjoy a Mozartkugel, and perhaps raise a glass of Austrian wine to toast a wonderful trip.

After a week filled with lakes, mountains, history, and Austrian joie de vivre, it’s time to say goodbye. Perhaps with one last breakfast and a true Austrian classic: coffee and apple strudel.
