Altmuehltal - In the Franconian lake district

from/to Rothenburg

Itinerary

Route

On the Altmühltal cycle path, you will travel on an ascent free route on mounted forest and field paths, small side streets with little traffic as well as mostly on fine gravelled cycle paths. When travelling along the Main Danube canal, you will cycle on mounted gravel paths. On the Franconian Wasser cycle path, you will cycle on a route without any larger ascents, apart from a few exceptions.

Individual arrival. On the first evening, you can take a stroll with the Rothenburg night watchman.

Travelling through the upper Altmühltal valley, you will cycle to Herrieden, where you can still sense the medieval atmosphere. Before reaching your stage destination Gunzenhausen, it is possible to enjoy a refreshing swim in the splendid Altmühlsee Lake.

The nature park Altmühltal unveils a landscape of unique beauty. In Eichstätt, you can admire the baroque splendour of the former prince bishop town.

Travelling through the nature reserve area of the Gungoldinger Wacholderheide (juniper heath), the cycling tour then leads to Beilngries. The historic old town centre is surrounded by a well preserved city wall.

Today, this diverse cycling tour leads you from the Altmühltal valley along the Main Danube canal to Hipoltstein. The castle town lies embedded in meadows and pastures. At the nearby idyllic Rothsee Lake, you can relax in the well kept sunbat hing areas.

Travelling along the Burgenstraße, this stage of the Franconian Wasser cycle path will lead you from the Franconian lake country into romantic Franconia. Travelling via the Minnesinger town of Wolframs Eschenbach with its completely preserved town wall, you will then reach the former residence city of Ansbach.

During the following route section, numerous historical discoveries make the Franconian Wasser cycle path a particularly impressive one. After Colmberg with its imposing castle, you will cycle through the hilly foothills of the Frankenhöhe to Rothenburg.

Individual departure or extension of your stay.
