The Bavarian Danube

Donauwoerth - Passau

Tour map

Route

Tour profile:

to a large extent the route is flat and along asphalt paths, some parts of the path run along compressed earthen paths.

Day 1: Donauwoerth/Woernitzstein

Individual arrival. Your trip begins in the beautiful city of Donauwörth, where the former most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crossed the Danube.

Day 2: Donauwoerth/Woernitzstein – Ingolstadt, approx. 65 km

You will speed along today’s route on good quality surfaces. Just before Marxheim you will come to the foothills of the Franconian Jura which will introduce some small hills to your cycle. Don’t miss to visit the old town of Neuburg before going on towards Ingolstadt. The Museum Mobile is worth a visit. Or take a stroll through the old town within the old fortified walls.

Day 3: Ingolstadt – Kehlheim/Abensberg, approx. 50 - 60 km (+ boat)

You cycle through the Danube floodplains, mostly directly along the river, to Bad Gögging. Shortly thereafter, a very special natural spectacle awaits you: the Danube breakthrough at Weltenburg Monastery, where the Danube has carved its way through a massive Jurassic rock. Strengthen yourselves in the beer garden of the monastery, before you arrive with the ship by the Danube breakthrough to Kelheim. Alternatively, you can stay overnight in Abensberg and take the boat trip the following day.

Day 4: Kehlheim/Abensberg – Regensburg, approx. 55 km (+ boat)

You cycle along the Abens and then the Danube to Weltenburg Monastery, where a very special natural spectacle awaits you: the Danube Gorge, where the Danube has dug its way through a massive Jura rock. But be sure to strengthen yourself in the monastery’s beer garden before you take the ship through the Danube Gorge to Kelheim and from there on to Regensburg.

Day 5: Regensburg – Straubing, approx. 55 km

The Danube now meanders through the wide plain, and you cycle leisurely along. Take a short break at the Walhalla, which King Ludwig I had built, before you arrive in today’s destination of Straubing, the main town of the "Gäuboden" region. The Gäubodenfest, a popular folk festival, takes place here every summer.

Day 6: Straubing – Deggendorf, approx. 40 km

Soon after the start you will reach Bogen, which is known for the discovery of a statue of the pregnant Madonna. It continues through Pfelling and Mariaposching and finally you reach the gateway to the Bavarian Forest: Deggendorf, where Gothic and Baroque characterize the old town.

Day 7: Deggendorf – Passau, approx. 55 km

On your way today is the historic town of Vilshofen, which you may know from the Ash Wednesday speeches by CSU Chairman Strauss. Soon you will reach your destination, the three-river city and former bishop’s residence of Passau. End your trip with a stroll through the old town

Day 8: Passau

Bavarian Danube cycle. Donauwoerth to Passau.

Cycles good. Regensberg and Donauwoerth accomodation very uncomfortable due to heat and lack of airconditon/ventilation. Help when problems with bike was excellent. Mechanic was so good. Desk staff in Passau unsure of how to deal with keys to bike. ...
