From Tübingen to Heidelberg

Route

Tourprofile / Level 2

A very scenic tour along the river „Neckar“ with some challenging sections as you sometimes leave the natural course of the river. Slight ascents and some occasional steeper inclines have to be taken into account. The bike trail is well signed and leads you on calm side roads and bike paths through marvellous scenery. Short sections have to be passed on roads with traffic – especially through villages.

Day 1: Tübingen

Individual arrival in the Swabian university town Tübingen. Be enchanted by the picturesque old town and the steep winding streets.

Day 2: Tübingen – Esslingen, approx. 55 km

You continue downriver through lovely countryside. You pass several inviting lakes, where you can stop for a swim, before arriving in the picturesque town of Nürtingen. Via Plochingen, where you should take the time to see the House and Tower by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, you make your way to Esslingen.

Day 3: Esslingen – Marbach/Freiberg, approx. 40-45 km

Today, your cycling tour leads you into the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart. Passing by the baroque city Ludwigsburg, you will arrive at Marbach, the birthplace of the famous poet Friedrich Schiller. A visit to his birth house (incl.) gives you an impression of the way how life was back then.

Day 4: Marbach/Freiberg – Heilbronn, approx. 40-45 km

You cycle over fields and pastures to Besigheim and continue to travel close to the riverbank, into the wine village Lauffen. Travelling through vineyards, you will then reach the Käthchen city Heilbronn. Use the remaining time for a stroll through the old city and visit the numerous monuments, for example the gothic Kilians church or the city hall which is one of the loveliest in Germany.

Day 5: Heilbronn – Region Eberbach, approx. 35-55 km

You follow the street "Burgenstraße" and arrive in Neckarsulm, where the German bicycle museum is located. Passing by lush wine terraces and wooded mountain ridges, you will pass the Hornberg castle and the Zwingenberg palace and will then reach the old staufer city Eberbach.

Day 6: Region Eberbach – Heidelberg, approx. 35-55 km

Between Eberbach and Heidelberg, the Neckar now winds its way through the mountain ranges of the Oden forest. You will reach Hirschhorn, which is dominated by its knight’s castle. You continue to cycle to the four-castle-town Neckarsteinach. In Neckargemünd, you cross the river again and will then arrive in the university city Heidelberg.

Day 7: Heidelberg
