Heidelberg + the Nibelungen

Roundtrip in the Rhein and Neckar region

Route

  • Tour profile: Level 1- 2

You cycle on well-developed bike paths, quiet country roads and well-drive forest roads. At the city entrances and exits you cycle on designated bike lanes and have to expect more traffic. The route runs through partly flat to slightly hilly terrain.

  • Day 1: Heidelberg

Visit the University library and take a look at the precious ManesseHandwriting. In the evening, we recommend taking a stroll through the „Untere Straße“.

  • Day 2: Heidelberg – Bensheim/Zwingenberg, approx. 45-50 km

Your cycling holiday begins with the journey along the Neckar to Ladenburg. In the Lobdengau-Museum, you can visit an open-air museum among other things. Passing pretty towns and castles, you will arrive at the market place of Heppenheim. You will reach Zwingenberg via Bensheim, the oldest city on the Bergstraße.

  • Day 3: Bensheim/Zwingenberg – Worms, approx. 30-35 km

Today’s first highlight is the Carolingian Gate- or Kings Hall in Lorsch. The UNESCO has placed the pre-Romanesque building on the list of world heritage. You cross the Rhine at Worms. Here you can visit the Imperial cathedral and the historical churches.

  • Day 4: Worms – Deidesheim region, approx. 40-60 km

You leave the cathedral-, Luther- and Nibelungen city of Worms and reach the famous Weinstraße. Apart from wine, exotic fruit such as lemons or figs grow here due to the mild climate. Here the sun shines for approx. 1500 hours per year. Daily destination is Bad Dürkheim with the Dürkheimer Giant Cask, as an alternative Deidesheim or Neustadt.

  • Day 5: Deidesheim region – Speyer, approx. 30-50 km

You travel along the Weinstraße to Wachenheim, where you can take a side-trip on foot to Wachtenburg. Afterwards, the wine region Deidesheim awaits you, with a lot of framework and homeliness. Stroll through the old city alleys in Neustadt or treat yourself to hearty Pfälzer cuisine in one of the restaurants. A signed cycle path leads through shady forest areas from Neustadt to Speyer. Speyer’s landmark is the Salian Imperial cathedral dating back to 1030, also UNESCO world heritage.

  • Day 6: Speyer – Heidelberg, approx. 30 km

Your last stage leads you along the Kurpfalz (Electoral Palatinate) route into the asparagus city Schwetzingen. The park of the famous hunting and summer residence is one of the loveliest gardens of the Baroque- and Rokoko periods. In Heidelberg, you can enjoy a ride with the mountain railway and visit the world famous castle (incl.)
