Bordeaux - Toulouse

Tour along the Garonne Canal

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / level 2

Flat roads and paths, 90% cycle paths. Good physical condition required.

Day 1: Bordeaux

Individual arrival and optional visits to the Cité de Vin, Bassin des Lumières, etc. (can be booked at an additional cost)

Day 2: Bordeaux – Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, approx. 57 km

Your bike will be delivered to you at your hotel in the morning. The first stage takes you to Sauveterre-de-Guyenne via the Scandiberique cycle path. You cycle between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers through a dominant wine-growing culture. The second part of the tour follows the Tour de Gironde from Créon on the Roger Lapébie path. You will reach Sauveterre with its fortified gates.

Day 3: Sauveterre-de-Guyenne – Varès, approx. 68 km

In the heart of the Entre-deux-Mers region, surrounded by a sea of vineyards, this transitional cycle route with its more pronounced relief joins the Garonne Canal at La Réole. This large town has some hidden treasures within its city walls. In the narrow streets, don’t miss the 13th-century church of St. Peter or the esplanade next to the former Benedictine abbey overlooking the valley.

Day 4: Varès – Agen, approx. 52 km

You start the day by crossing the Garonne in Tonneins to reach the side canal, and then continue through Damazan with its half-timbered houses. The cycle path continues on the “voie verte” along the Garonne, past the lively port of Buzet-sur-Baïse, which is known for its Côte Buzet. You will reach Agen via one of the largest bridge canals in France (600 m). The city offers a remarkable historic center.

Day 5: Agen – Castelsarrasin, approx. 54 km

From Agen to Moissac, the cycle path gently follows the canal. On the famous Way of St. James, it extends peacefully along the banks of the Tarn. Be sure to visit the abbey church, whose cloister (76 different historicized capitals) is one of the most beautiful in the world and whose southern portal has a tympanum of Romanesque art. The entire complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The Canal des 2 mers leads from Moissac to Castelsarrasin, passing the remarkable Cacor Bridge.

Day 6: Castelsarrasin – Toulouse, approx. 61 km

Follow the greenway along the Garonne Canal and pass through Montech, its bastide waterway, then on to the Grisolles Calbet Museum and finally to Castelnau d’Estretefonds. Here you leave the calm behind and approach Toulouse at Ponts-Jumeaux, the intersection between the Garonne, Brienne and Canal du Midi. Enjoy the warm, colorful atmosphere of Toulouse.
