Rome and Lazio

cultural highlights along the Via Appia Antica

Itinerary

Route

Asphalted roads 90%, dirt roads 10%; on the first cycling day you need to drive 6km on the Nettunense expressway - alternatives are available!

  • By Train: We will provide the specific timetable based on the day, noting that these are frequent local services.
  • Extended Route: A longer path that allows you to bypass 2.6 km of the Nettunense.

Daily distances of 30-60 km with altitude differences less than 200 m. On day 3 some hilly parts in the hills of Sermoneta.

Individual arrival

At 9 am there will be a briefing for the delivery of the bike and the meeting with the local representative. You take the Via Appia Antica to follow this old road for 16 km without cars on old pavements between 2000-year-old funerary monuments and the remains of ancient Roman villas. In the afternoon you cycle through the Castelli Romani area, south of the city, up to Lanuvio.

Through landscapes of grapes and kiwi orchards you continue through idyllic and lush countryside. On the way we recommend you visit the Valvisciolo Abbey, an ancient monastery still in operation. From there you continue to the cliff top town of Sermoneta (840 ft), where you can enjoy the life of an authentic medieval village. The castle that dominates the village is 900 years old!

You descend towards the plain that during Mussolini’s times was transformed from a marshy area to a varied agricultural area where fruit is grown today, including kiwis. this large plain is also famous for the production of mozzarella, especially that made from buffalo milk. In fact, you come across several buffalo farms. Great views until you finally reach Terracina and the sea.

The first part of the day runs along the sea until leaving Terracina. Here Trajan cut the rock in two to allow the Appian Way to pass. You move inland on small roads along the greenhouses before heading towards one of the delightful beaches of Sperlonga a pleasant little square.
