Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / level 2-3

The tour leads mostly on very quiet metalled roads or good unsurfaced tracks. The routes are alternately flat or hilly, with some steep climbs and descents.

Day 1: Faro

Individual arrival and check-in at your hotel in Faro. You will be welcomed by a representative in the reception area of the hotel at the agreed time. Then the tour information will be given to you and we will answer any questions you may have. Your bicycles will be handed over to you and any necessary adjustments made.

Day 2: Faro – Vaqueiros, approx. 39 km

In the morning transfer to Azinhal, near the Spanish border, where your tour begins. You cycle on quiet roads through the village and continue towards the border river Guadiana. The route then leads into the hilly “Serra do Caldeirão”. From a hill you can enjoy the view of Odeleite and the deep blue reservoir, before descending to the village. After a section along the reservoir, the route passes through lonely, unspoilt landscapes lined with broom and rockrose bushes. Passing partly abandoned, whitewashed hamlets, the route finally climbs gently to Vaqueiros, where you will spend the night.

Day 3: Vaqueiros – Barranco do Velho, approx. 39 km

Today, the route is lined with spruce, almond and eucalyptus trees, as well as medronho bushes. After a stop in the quiet village of Cachapo, which impresses with its original character and a cozy café, the route continues through fragrant spruce groves. From the hilltops, there are impressive views of the Serra and the coast. After Castelão, the route leads down to the Ribeira de Odeleite, which you cross over an old stone bridge. Along the riverbank and over the Rota de Cortiça, you finally reach the stage destination of Barranco do Velho.

Day 4: Barranco do Velho – São Bartolomeu Messines, approx. 45 km

A long, exhilarating descent on a freshly paved, traffic-free road leads through a forest of ancient cork oaks. On a panoramic road, you will have magnificent views of the coast towards São Bartolomeu de Messines. A detour leads around the impressive “Rocha da Pena”. In Benafim, pastelarias invite you to take a break. After that, orange groves and carob, fig and almond trees characterize the landscape. After a final ascent, the stage ends with a long descent. Your accommodation is in a charmingly renovated 16th-century building with its own restaurant.

Day 5: São Bartolomeu de Messines – Monchique, approx. 54 km

Today’s stage combines paved natural paths and paved roads with some steep and winding sections. At the beginning, you can enjoy the view of the deep blue reservoir “Barragem do Funcho”, surrounded by the green hills of the Serra, from a hill. Along the lush riverside path, you will reach the idyllic reservoir “Barragem do Arade” via a steep descent. The route follows the Ribeiro Arade to Silves, followed by a flat section. A final ascent leads to the spa town of Caldas de Monchique, idyllically situated in an evergreen valley.

Day 6: Monchique – Aljezur, approx. 53 km

Today’s route takes you across the Serra to the impressive west coast. After a short ascent into the evergreen hills of the Serra de Monchique, the route continues westwards over a high plateau to Marmelete and on to Aljezur in a long descent. A loop takes you directly to the beach “Praia de Monte Clérigo” in the nature reserve Costa Vicentina. This area, one of the best-protected coastal strips in Europe, enchants with its unique flora and fauna, fragrant herbs and eucalyptus groves. Via a castle hill and through the alleys of Aljezur’s old town, you will reach your accommodation.

Day 7: Aljezur – Sagres, approx. 60 km

The last stage leads along the coast to Sagres. Initially, the route follows a dirt road to Carrapateira, a small town in the middle of a dune area, recognizable by its windmill. The route continues through green Macchia landscapes along spectacular cliffs with a view of the Atlantic, past two sandy coves and through pine groves to Vila do Bispo. A detour to Cabo de São Vicente, the most southwesterly point of Europe, offers breathtaking views from the lighthouse. Via a steppe-like plateau, you reach Sagres with the fortress of Fortaleza de Sagres, once home to a famous school of navigators.

Day 8: Sagres
