Danube Cycle Path Linz - Vienna

    From Linz to Vienna

    • The Linz to Vienna cycle tour is an exciting and diverse experience. You begin this five day variant of this popular route in the Upper Austrian state capital of Linz.

Explore the city on the bright yellow Linz City Express (not included) and/or ride the steepest mountain railway in Europe, built in 1898, up Pöstling Mountain. The start of the cycle tour will see you ride through the wild Strudengau region and the Baroque village of Grein, home to the oldest city theatre in Austria. The enchanting Wachau is a landscape of vineyards, apricot trees, small towns and mysterious castles.

Don’t forget to sample the renowned local Austrian wine or spritzers! The crowning conclusion of this grand cycling tour is the metropolis of Vienna with its numerous and charming attractions, welcoming cafes and lively culture.

      Tour profile:

The cycling path is completely paved from one end to the other, flat, almost always directly along the riverbank and very suitable for beginners and children.

      Day 1: Linz

Individual arrival. Explore this spirited city on your own: Why not take a ride on the Linz City Express (not included) or visit one of the many beer gardens and/or wine taverns? Linz is a city of contrasting sights and is full of traditional Austrian heritage, is home to a vibrant Contemporary Arts scene and was voted the European Culture Capital in 2009. Enjoy!

Day 2: Linz – Strudengau, approx. 60 km

Passing through the beautiful Mostviertel, you cycle on to Grein. Shortly before reaching Grein, the Danube valley narrows as you cycle through the fascinating landscape of the Strudengau. In the small Baroque village of Grein you can find the oldest city theatre in Austria as well as a great Maritime Museum and a castle.

Day 3: Strudengau – Nibelungengau, approx. 40 km

You will cycle through the impressive landscapes of the wild Strudengau and the Nibelungengau continuing on to the remarkable Wachau (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Region).

      Day 4: Nibelungengau – Vienna, approx. 48 km + Train ride Krems-Vienna

Follow the Danube through the gorgeous landscapes of the Wachau on your way to the 1000-year-old winery city of Krems. Observe and enjoy the exceptional Gothic architecture. From here, sit back and relax by taking a comfortable train ride to the Danube metropolis, Austrian capital and city of the Waltz, Vienna.

      E-bike

By popular demand, we have now invested in a considerable number of e-bikes, much favoured by cyclists who love the great Outdoors, but prefer to let the bike take the strain.

With an electro bike every bike tour is a breeze! If you had few opportunities to cycle over the last weeks or if you are not sure concerning your fitness, but also with physical disabilities, every bike ride is a treat! The shiftable, low noise electric drive of our modern E-bike relieves you of some of the work and increases the pedal force up to 3 times ... So you can now book a bike tour together with cyclists who have different fitness level. Acclivity can be handled easily.
Please note that it won’t be possible to fix the handlebar bags on some of our E-Bikes.

      Bicycle breakdowns

can happen even with new wheels and by best servicing. With the rental bikes you will receive repair vouchers which you can present in our authorised workshops along the way. Should a repair not be possible, please contact our service number! In a few hotels/guest houses we have some bikes on stock if you need to change them during the trip.

      Private bicycles

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle. It is adapted especially to your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival.

For the return journey to Passau we recommend the reservation of the bus transfer or the train ride - some trains offer bicycle-parking possibilities, however those are limited and a reservation is necessary.
