Sunny Provence and Camargue by Bike + Boat

Multifaceted and dreamy at the same time

Itinerary

Route

The route is completely flat in the two stages of Camargue, while north of Arles it goes a bit downhill and uphill. There is a more challenging climb towards Baux de Provence, but then you will enjoy a wonderful panorama. The tour is mostly on minor roads with little traffic, but some short stretches are on roads with more traffic that you can’t avoid. Two boat trips are also included.

Day 1: Avignon
Individual arrival. Boarding begins at 5:00 p.m. The ship will be waiting for you at Quai de la Ligne, near the famous Pont Saint-Bénezet bridge.

Day 2: Avignon Loop, approx. 45 km
Today, after crossing Île de la Barthelasse, you’ll reach the other bank of the Rhône and cycle through vineyards and orchards to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On the way back, you’ll pass through Roquemaure and Villeneuve. Dinner is at your leisure in Avignon.

Day 3: Aramon loop, approx. 45 km
In the morning, the ship takes you to Aramon, from where you’ll cycle to the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe: the Pont du Gard. Tonight, you’ll spend the night back in Aramon on the ship, with a beautiful view of Mont Ventoux.

Day 4: Vallabrègues Loop, approx. 35 km
The morning boat trip takes you to Vallabrègues, a beautiful village on the banks of the Rhône. You’ll now cycle along country roads to Barbentane, where you can admire the imposing castle nestled between the Rhône and Durance rivers. Then you’ll continue on to the magnificent Abbey of Saint Michel de Frigulet and finally to the medieval Château de Boulbon. Overnight stay back in Vallabrègues.

Day 5: Vallabrègues – Arles, approx. 65 km
This stage takes you to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the birthplace of Nostradamus. This village is also famous because Van Gogh lived here during his mental illness. Then you’ll ride to the Alpilles region, home to the village of Les-Baux-de-Provence. The landscape is characterized by limestone cliffs and olive trees.

Day 6: Arles – Aigues-Mortes, approx. 30 km
In the morning, you’ll visit Arles, the ancient capital of Gaul, with its beautiful Roman ruins. A tour guide will accompany you through the city. After lunch, you’ll cycle to Franquevaux, from where a short boat ride will take you to Aigues-Mortes.

Day 7: Aigues-Mortes loop, approx. 45 km
On your way through the Camargue, past canals, lagoons, and small villages, you’ll reach La Cailar, Marsillargues, and Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze, known for their ancient bullfighting traditions. In the afternoon, you’ll visit an organic winery and enjoy a wine tasting.

Day 8: Aigues-Mortes
Departure after breakfast or individual extension in Aigues-Mortes

Day 1: Aigues-Mortes
Individual arrival in Aigues-Mortes. Explore this fascinating town with its fully preserved medieval city walls. Boarding is possible from 5:00 PM.

Day 2: Aigues-Mortes Round Trip, approx. 45 km
On the way through the Camargue, past canals, lagoons, and small villages, you’ll reach La Cailar, Marsillargues, and Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze, which are known for their ancient bullfighting traditions. In the afternoon, visit an organic winery and enjoy a wine tasting.

Day 3: Aigues-Mortes – Arles, approx. 30 km
In the morning, the ship takes you to Franquevaux, where your tour toward Arles begins. Arles captivates with a wealth of Roman ruins and other treasures, which you will explore in the afternoon.

Day 4: Arles – Vallabrègues, approx. 65 km
Today’s stage takes you to the Alpilles, including the village of Les-Baux-de-Provence, and then on to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the birthplace of Nostradamus and a brief residence of Van Gogh. The landscape is characterized by limestone cliffs and olive trees. In the evening, you’ll moor in Vallabrègues, a charming Provençal village on the banks of the Rhône.

Day 5: Vallabrègues Loop, approx. 35 km
You’ll start in Vallabrègues, the village of basket weavers, and cross the fertile countryside with its orchards to the old village of Boulbon, where the ruins of a mighty 15th-century castle offer a magnificent view over the Rhône Valley. From here, the route continues to Tarascon, where the most beautiful castle in Provence awaits you on the banks of the Rhône. In Beaucaire, you’ll find another castle whose battlements are still partially accessible. The bike path along the old railway line to Remoulins then leads you to the foot of the cave abbey of St. Romain, an impressive fortified monastery carved entirely into the rock. Overnight stay in Vallabrègues.

Day 6: Aramon Loop, approx. 45 km
Today’s stage first takes you to the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe: the Pont du Gard. Back in Aramon, you’ll take a boat to Avignon, the City of the Popes. The boat docks at the Quai de la Ligne, near the famous Pont St. Bénezet.

Day 7: Avignon Loop, approx. 45 km
Today, crossing the Île de la Barthelasse, you reach the other bank of the Rhône and cycle through the typical garrigue landscape, between vineyards and orchards, to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. During the ride, you’ll surely have the opportunity to taste the famous Provençal wine. Later, you’ll cross the Rhône at Roquemaure and return along the river via Villeneuve

Day 8: Avignon
After breakfast, individual departure or extension in Avignon

Normally you will follow the Rhone River and the Rhone-Sète Canal. For organizational reasons, due to weather conditions or according to regulations of local authorities, some changes in the itinerary may occur before and/or during the vacation. High and low water, as well as logistical obstacles such as (unpredictable) maintenance works over bridges or locks may change the daily routes or moorings and may even require a bus transfer. The decision is made solely by the captain.

An excellent tour with a fun group of people. Our seniors group were a little nervous of taking on a level two but with only occasional bike pushing, no ebikes, we managed. Our food, cooked by Rose was so delicious and appropriate for the region...S.R. 10/18
