Lake Constance Relaxing Roundtrip

The great Lake Constance adventure tour

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile/level 1:

The area is flat without any climbs, moderately hilly in the region of Höri/Untersee. You bike on cycle paths, mostly along the shore of the lake, no major uphill stretches. Sporadically there are short, unfortified sections around Friedrichshafen, the cycle path runs parrallel to the highway. The lakeshore is mostly open to the public.

Day 1: Constance

Individual arrival. Enjoy the fantastic city centre with its Sea Life Center and the archeologial museum.

Day 2: Constance – Gailingen/Stein am Rhein, approx. 25-35 km + boat trip

First highlight is the Reichenau Island, UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will visit idyllic peninsula of Höri by boat and then cycle to Stein am Rhein in Switzerland or Gailingen in Germany.

Day 3: Rhine Falls, approx. 30-50 km

Today you will cycle along a beautiful riverscape to Schaffhausen. Its intact, medieval townscape is overlooked by the Munot fort, which was built in the 16th Century according to the principles of Albrecht Dürer’s fortification teachings. Then you will visit the Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Central Europe. A boat will bring you to the Rheinfall rocks, so that you can experience the full force of the thunderous waters. In the afternoon you will return to Gailingen/Stein am Rhein.

Day 4: Gailingen/Stein am Rhein – Constance, approx. 30-40 km

Today you will cycle through numerous picturesque Swiss fishing villages until you will reach the peaceful countryside of Unterberg. There you can visit the Napoleon museum (optional) and from there you will have a magnifique view over the Reichenau Island.

Day 5: Constance – Mainau Island – Radolfzell, approx. 30 km

Today you will explore the "flower island" of Mainau (ticket not inluded). Make sure you take enough time to enjoy this paradise-like island on the Überlingen Lake with its luxurious, colourful flowerbeds, towering mature trees, shady forests and sweet scented roses. After your visit you will have a short cycle through Allensbach, which is well known due to its public opinion research institute, to the former imperial town and modern Kneipp health resort of Radolfzell.

Day 6: Radolfzell – Uhldingen/Meersburg, approx. 35-40 km

Today, you will first cross the Bodanrück and then reach Lake Überlingen near Bodman, before heading to the former imperial city of Überlingen with its Gothic cathedral and famous lakeside promenade. Afterwards, the tour continues in the direction of Meersburg. The baroque pilgrimage church of Birnau and the reconstructed pile dwellings near Uhldingen are definitely worth a visit!

Day 7: Uhldingen/Meersburg – Friedrichshafen, approx. 20-25 km

The oldest inhabited castle in Germany, the New Castle with its magnificent staircase and the market square are just a few of the many attractions to be discovered in Meersburg. Cycle along the beautiful alpine panorama in the direction of Friedrichshafen and visit the Zeppelin Museum!

Day 8: Friedrichshafen – Bregenz, approx. 40 km

Today’s stage leads through Langenargen, where the model of the famous Golden Gate Bridge is located. The rest of the way runs through extensive orchards to Lindau. The old town, part of which lies on an island, is definitely worth seeing. Overnight stay in the festival town of Bregenz with its unique lake stage.

Day 9: Bregenz (Pfänder) – St. Gallen, approx. 50 km + train ride

The cable car will bring you and your bicycle to the top of the Pfänder, the Bregenz mountain which is 1064m high. Enjoy the stunning view of the Alps and over the lake. You will then continue along the Alpine Rhine to Altstätten. Take the train to Gais in the Appenzell region and you cycle through picture-perfect landscapes to St. Gallen.

Day 10: Day of rest in St. Gallen or hiking tour in the Appenzell region

Today you discover St. Gallen, which attracts visitors with its historical old-town architecture, cosy restaurants, shopping streets and idyllic parks. The abbey of St. Gallen has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Alternatively you can go on a hiking tour in the Appenzell region.

Day 11: St. Gallen – Constance, approx. 45 km

Today you cycle pleasantly downhill back to Lake Constance, which you reach at Arbon. From there you cycle directly along the lake through small towns and villages back to Constance/Kreuzlingen.

Enjoyable

First two days of trip were much less enjoyable than the remainder of the trip. At 82 years of age, I would not have been able to complete the tour on a shorter number of days, fighting some raw drizzly days with gusty winds (although there were sunny ...
