Southern Poland, Slovakia and Krakow

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / level 2

You cycle on quiet, well-maintained roads and paths. Occasionally (only for a few kilometers) the route changes to busier roads or field paths. The route is flat with some short uphill stretches.

Day 1: Krakow

Individual arrival. Take a stroll through the old town.

Day 2: Krakow – Zakopane, approx. 24 km

You start with a cycle tour through Krakow, the former capital of Poland and residence of the polish kings. Experience the wonderful atmosphere of this city. Afterwards bustransfer to the village of Zab (approx. 2,5 hours). From there you go downhill to Zakopane and meanwhile enjoy the beautiful view over the High Tatra Mountains. The traditions of the Gorale people are conservated here.

Day 3: Zakopane – Nowy Targ, approx. 46 km

You start with a cable car ride to the top of Gubalowka mountain. You cycle to Chocholow, a village famous for it´s "living open air museum". Via the valley of Cichy Potok ("the quiet stream") and the village of Ludzmierz you reach Nowy Targ, the center of the High Tatra and today´s end destination.

Day 4: Nowy Targ – Niedzica, approx. 44 km

You follow the river Dunajec and then the Bialka till the impressive gorge at Nowa Biala. You are now in the region of Spisz, which has a rich history and unique culture. Until 1918 this area was part of Hungary and home of several ethnic groups: Gorale and Ruthenians lived in the villages, Germans in the towns and Hungarian nobility in the castles.

Day 5: Niedzica – Szczawnica, approx. 28 km

You cross the border to Slovakia and ride to the village of Cerveny Klasto (Red Monastery). Admire the highest point of the Pieniny mountain range, the imposing three peaks of Trzy Krony (Three Crowns). You will feel like you where in a different world once you entered the Dunajec gorge - a breathtaking scenery awaits you. Next you cycle through another gorge, Lessnicky Potek, before you return to Poland and reach the small spa town of Szczawnica.

Day 6: Szczawnica – Rytro, approx. 50-55 km

Today’s route leads through the so-called green Dunajec Gorge, as the river runs right through two of the Beskid mountains. Next you cycle through pretty orchards and decorated peasant huts of the village Tylmanowa. The current hotel is located on the banks of the Poprad river.

Day 7: Rytro – Krakow, approx. 25-30 km

After breakfast we take a 15 km ride through the Poprad Valley to Stary Sacz, although yo may prolongate the tour and cycle upstream the river to spa town Piwniczna. Early afternoon is spent exploring Stary Sacz - the historic little town, one of the most beautiful in southern Poland, cycling through the maze of narrow streets for a feel of the atmosphere of past times. 2019 Update: We have been using a new route which uses a bridge over the Poprad river built especially for cyclists; This comfortable path leads to Nowy Sacz, another historic town, with a large market square and art-deco houses. A pedestrian zone with variety of restaurants is a perfect place for lunch. After lunch we return to Krakow (bus journey about  2 hours). Our accommodation for the last night is usually in the same hotel as on the first night, but we will spend the rest of the day in the quiet Kazimierz district, once the Jewish quarter of the city. An evening of Klezmer music brings the tour to a close.

    Arrival - Parking - Departure

    Arrival by plane

    Airport:  Krakow (KRK)
The cab should not cost more than about 60-70 zl (€ 17-20,-) (please be sure to check with the cab driver in advance). You can get to the center very cheaply by train - the new airport train station "Krakow Lotnisko" is located just behind the parking garage opposite the terminal. Trains leave every half hour, in 17 minutes you can get to the main station for only 8 PLN (about € 2,-).

    Arrival by car

Parking: in the city center (near arrival hotel), approx € 70-90,-/week, at the Airport € 20-30,-/week.

Free parking near the bike rental available.

Driving in the centre is really complicated so if you decide to arrive by car, use GPS-navigation. The best way is to take the following route: Pasternik - Opolska - al. 29 Listopada - Warszawska (do not miss it the turn aft er the bridge over the railway!) - Basztowa - Westerplatt e - left to Kopernika st. where you will fi nd the gateway to the hotel parking.

    Arrival by train

    Train station: Krakow
If your luggage is not too heavy you can get to the hotel by an approx. 10-15 minutes’ walk. Otherwise a taxi is a good opti on (cost approximately 10zl = approx. € 3,-). If you do not have any zlotys you can find both currency exchanges and cash machines near the railway station.
