Good cycling, sub-par boat
We had a so-so week on the Anna Maria. The cabins are very small, which we expected. The food, however, was a disappointment. Breakfast was the same every morning. Always the same type of bread. No eggs, pastries, croissants, or rolls. Only one hot item (french toast) during the entire week. Always just one type of fruit offered. Lunch was always the same type of cold cuts and same bread. Dinners were better, but nothing special. Salads were just lettuce. I expected more from a French cook.
On a positive note our guide, Arie, was excellent. Friendly, helpful, and a great sense of humor. He knew the routes well, but it would have been nice to have had a personal map for each day. The cycling was very flat and not many kms each day. If you want to be challenged this is not the trip for you. I also expected the towns and scenery to be a bit more interesting. Don’t expect to visit those magnificent chateaus you see on the lower Loire.
Overall, I wouldn’t do this tour again. I think there are far more interesting choices and barges with much better food.
