The "Salzkammergut" is known as the capital of The Sound of Music and belongs to one of the most charming regions in all of Austria: blue lakes, imposing mountains, green meadows and forests truly create a fairy tale landscape.

The pristine lakes Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee and Wolfgangsee are the most well known bodies of water in the region.

Other highlights on this cycling tour certainly include a former and highly regarded Austrian emperor’s summer-residence Bad Ischl and the Music and Festival City of Salzburg.

Tour profile / Level 2

Country roads, cycling paths, field paths, terrain is hilly with some larger uphill stretches.

Day 1: Salzburg

Individual arrival and bike hand over (if you have booked our bikes). Use the extra time for a stroll through the picturesque old part of this cultural and fascinating town.

Day 2: Salzburg – Lake Wolfgangsee, approx. 45 km + boat (Cat. A)

You begin the tour exploring the birthplace of the world famous classical composer W.A. Mozart and then head north to the old train tracks of the Salzkammergut railway. After cycling through Eugendorf and St. Gilgen you reach the southern banks of the blissful lake "Wolfgangsee", where you enjoy a nice boat ride.

Day 3: Lake Wolfgangsee – Lake Traunsee, approx. 41 - 49 km + boat (Cat. B)

The day begins with a relaxing boat ride on Lake Wolfgangsee (Cat. B). You explore St.Wolfgang before you cycle to the old imperial village of Bad Ischl, where you find traces and follow the footprints of Emperor Franz Josef and his Empress Sissi all over the area. A "must-do" is a stop at the famous pastry shop "Zauner". Be careful, don’t eat too much! Along the river Traun you cycle until Traunkirchen.

Day 4: Lake Traunsee – Lake Attersee, approx. 32 - 40 km

One of the many highlights on this tour is the stop-off in Gmunden. Gmunden is a scenic village on the northern bank of the Traunsee and former imperial salt capital, but nowadays it’s well known for its touristic importance and beautiful handmade ceramics. You then move along further to the gorgeous area of lake Attersee.

Day 5: Lake Attersee – Lake Mondsee, approx. 33 km

Take in and enjoy the ride along the Attersee, one of the most favourite lakes for locals and visitors alike in the Salzkammergut Region. This lake has already inspired famous artists like composer Gustav Mahler and painters Gustav Klimt and Christian Ludwig Attersee. Your path continues to Mondsee and then onto the village of Mondsee. Visit the church, which was used as a romantic backdrop for the wedding in the musical "The Sound of Music".

Day 6: Lake Mondsee – Trumer Seenland, approx. 46 km

Along the old tracks of the "Ischler" railway that once brought guests into the Salzkammergut, you will cycle further to the Trumer Lake District; Obertrumer See, Mattsee and Grabensee. Fans of Beer should visit the Trumer brewery!

Day 7: Trumer Seenland – Salzburg approx. 46 km

On the day before departure there is still plenty of time to enjoy nature’s beauty and pristine, before you cycle back to Salzburg.

Day 8: Salzburg

Bicycle breakdowns

It can happen even with new wheels and by best servicing. With the rental bikes you will receive repair vouchers which you can present in our authorised workshops along the way. Should a repair not be possible, please contact our service number! In a few hotels/guest houses we have some bikes on stock if you need to change them during the trip.

Private bicycles

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle. It is adapted especially to your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival.

Valid for danube cycle path: For the return journey to Passau we recommend the reservation of the bus transfer or the train ride - some trains offer bicycle-parking possibilities, however those are limited and a reservation is necessary.

Rental bike disclaimer

If a traveller rents a bike, he is basically liable for damages and theft. When booking our rental bike disclaimer, we assume liability so that in case of loss or damage to the rental bike (when properly used and secured) no financial responsibility must be paid. Excluded from this are only lost keys, batteries and chargers of e-bikes, as well as damage due to intent or gross negligence.

I think that it was level 3 (not 2) and it was very difficult. The Hotel Gasthof Neumayr, Obertrum is not appropriate to category A

Beautiful spin in the Salzburg hills.

Very happy with R+R patience and flexibility when we were making our booking. Rented bikes were in very good condition and well equipped with two panniers each. But sizing for the smaller (female) member was still large - perhaps make a smaller frame ...
