Main Winery tour

Schweinfurt - Aschaffenburg

Route

Tour profile/ Level 1:

The continuously signposted cycle path mostly runs along the riverside and doesn’t have any bigger gradients. It is almost completely asphalted and nearly car-free.

Day 1: Schweinfurt

Individual arrival.

Day 2: Schweinfurt - Sommerach, approx. 40 km

A beautiful bike path leads you through small wine villages in the heart of the Franconian wine country through the Volkacher Main loop, the largest contiguous vineyard region of Franconia. Enjoy the picturesque village Sommerach with its baroque houses and half-timbered wineries. You will visit the winery cellar, the oldest wine association. Come to the "Kostbar" with sales and serving of wine, the "Sommerbar" for relaxation and the Wine School. In the afternoon we recommend a guided wine tour. Look forward to an entertaining tour through nature, wine school and wine cellar. You will learn about the Sommeracher vineyards, about hundred years of history of the wine cellar and the craftsmanship of the wine grower (every Friday, Saturday, Sunday at 3 p.m.).

Day 3: Sommerach - Ochsenfurt/ Sommerhausen, approx. 35 - 42 km

After a few kilometers the old town of Dettelbach invites you to enjoy a worthwhile break. You will be fascinated by the almost completely preserved city walls, small towers and picturesque rows of half-timbered houses. Via Kitzingen, the largest wine trading city on the Main with its historic market square, and Marktbreit you will cycle to Ochsenfurt. Look forward to visiting the old town surrounded by a well-preserved defensive wall, where you can easily reach the city hall and the castle via the typical step gables. You will stay at the winery, look over the wine grower‘s shoulder and taste the fine wines.

Day 4: Ochsenfurt/Sommerhausen - Karlstadt, approx. 41 - 48 km

Via Eibelstadt and the picturesque wine village Randersacker you will cycle to Würzburg. In this beautiful city, the market square, the town hall, the imposing fortress and the Lady Chapel with its sandstone figures are worth seeing. The highlight is the former bishop’s residence, which was built 1720 - 1744 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. You will pass Veitshoechheim with its prince-bishop summer residence and French Rococo garden and then arrive in Thüngersheim. Some popular types of wine like  Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Rieslaner are grown here. You can visit the modern wine shop and convince yourself of the skills of the wine growers in Thüngersheim. Your destination for today is Karlstadt, whose old-town is surrounded by ancient walls, towers and gates.

Day 5: Karlstadt - Homburg, approx. 28 - 58 km

Now the landscape is changing: the characteristic viticulture disappears and shady forests mark the bike path. In only 10 minutes (Karstadt - Gemünden) or 25 minutes (Karlstadt-Lohr) by Maintalbahn, you can shorten the stage of today individually. After Lohr the bike path runs directly along the banks through the beautiful town of Marktheidenfeld. Enjoy the romantic wine village Homburg and the vineyards, which now again enrich the landscape.

Day 6: Homburg - Bürgstadt, approx. 46 km

You cycle along the riverside and enjoy pure nature while passing Wertheim with its lovely half-timbered houses and narrow old town and rediscovering vineyards near Bürgstadt. Bürgstadt is known for its excellent wine, perhaps because here the wine is still operated with the love of private wine growers. It is a pretty and jolly wine village and offers small delicacies in the „Häckerwirtschaften“. Look forward to the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Martin Chapel with its unique interior decoration.

Day 7: Bürgstadt - Aschaffenburg, approx. 46 km

Not very far from Bürgstadt you will arrive in Miltenberg, where you can admire the magnificent market square - better known as "Schnatterloch". Afterwards you cycle to Großheubach, where wine have been grown since since 1254. Even today, as for centuries the vines grow mainly on the steep stone terraces, as they are only found on the lower Main. These dry stone walls serve as a natural heat storage and create an extremely convenient microclimate. The weathered red sandstone soil is the basis for the noble red grape varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Madeleine, Portuguese or St. Laurent. On flat roads you cycle on to the sandstone Castle Johannesburg in Aschaffenburg.

Day 8: Aschaffenburg

Individual departure or extension.

Bicycle

Rental bikes

Our 7- or 27-speed-bikes

The robust modern aluminium frame with moulded lower tube guarantees quiet running even in case of high "payload". Same applies to the steel forks. All frames are coated with a long-living and non-polluting powder lacquer showing the typical Velociped green. There are, of course, different types of frame available depending on the size of ladies and gentlemen, as the bike must fit the "rider".

And: all ladies’ bikes have a low opening that makes mounting and dismounting much easier.

All 7-speed tourers have wide and comfortable saddles with a cushioning that offers maximum comfort even in an upright position. The seat post has a quick release skewers in order to adjust the saddle size without tools.

E-Bikes | Pedelecs

We use high-quality, sturdy and technically mature FLYER e-bikes produced by the Swiss manufacturers Biketec. The drive of e-bikes can be switched on and off, respectively at the touch of a button – at any time. Thus, you can make use of the motor for ascents or headwind only, or as permanent support enabling you to cover even larger and harder day trips without physical exertion. You’ll always reach your destination rested and relaxed. The Shimano 8-speed hub is equally graded, and the grip shifter ensures easy and smooth handling, also under load. You can therefore always select the optimal speed while at the same time using a smooth motor support.

Power is supplied to the motor by a 36 volt/12 ampere battery according to latest lithium-ion-polymer technology standards. The battery provides support for driving distances of up to approx. 100 km per charge. Recharging takes about 5 hours for completely discharged batteries. It is not necessary to wait until the battery is discharged, recharging is possible at any time.

Attention: Please reserve E-bikes early as they are always depending on availability.

Equipment

Our bikes are equipped with a map holder at the handlebar, a waterproof pannier on the side of the bicylcle rack and a repair kit with a backup inner tube and an emergency kit.

Bringing own bikes

Sure you are invited to bring you own bike which is already fitted best for your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival. Please note that we are not liable in case of damage, lost and theft. In case it breaks down, we will of course see to help you.

Nice Route - Some Issues

1. All other bike holidays we have had there has been a workshop or technician at the beginning of the tour to adjust or replace bikes. With this tour the bikes were just left for us to collect. They were not adjusted to the heights provided in advance. ...
