Rhine Bike Path by Bike + Boat

Mainz - Strasbourg (Kehl) / Strasbourg (Kehl) - Mainz

Route

Tour profile/level 1:

The quality of cycle ways is excellent. Most of the way is paved or asphalted and lead alongside the Rhine dikes without any gradients of note. This makes the trip suitable even for unpractised cyclists.

Itinerary Mainz - Strasbourg (Kehl)

Day 1: Mainz
Individual arrival to Mainz. There may be time to see the capital of Rheinland-Palatinate with its lovingly restored half-timbered houses in the Old Town and the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Martin. Embarkation will be from 3 to 5 p.m.

Day 2: Mainz - Nierstein - Worms, approx. 20 km
Cycle on the Rhine Cycle Route with its well-paved cycle ways directly alongside the Rhine to Nierstein, home to the largest wine-growing community on the Rhine. Visit the historic Old Town with its medieval market square and the noble houses. In the afternoon, sail from Nierstein to Worms. Guests, who would like to cycle a longer stretch, can start the bike ride already in Mainz (cycle tour Mainz-Worms approx. 60 km).

Day 3: Worms - Heidelberg, approx. 45 km
In the imperial city of Worms, you start for today’s tour leg. From Mannheim, you follow the course of the marvellous Neckar River up to Heidelberg. The Roman city of Ladenburg with its historic Old Town is well worth a stop-off. The ruin of Heidelberg Castle can be seen already from afar and towers over the city of Heidelberg, today’s destination. Admire the famous Heidelberg red sandstone bridge or take a stroll through the narrow lanes and see the picturesque squares.

Day 4: Heidelberg - Mannheim, approx. 47 km
Via Eppelheim and Plankstadt, cycle today through the core of the region of Electoral Palatinate, following partly the Castle Road. Almost all sights of the city, like the water tower and Mannheim Baroque Palace, are only a few minutes walking distance away from the city centre and are well worth visiting.

Day 5: Mannheim - Speyer, approx. 20 km
Alongside the numerous oxbow lakes of the Old Rhine leads the way to today’s destination – the cathedral city of Speyer. Enjoy the short bike ride through unspoilt nature, areas that are designated Natural Nature Reserves and natural flood plains. The Speyer Cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981.

Day 6: Speyer - Germersheim - Plittersdorf, approx. 25 km
By bike, continue your tour through the Palatinate region past oxbow lakes and untouched nature. Look forward to visiting the old fortified town of Germersheim with its numerous picturesque lanes, corners and squares. During dinner your ship moves on to Plittersdorf where you stay for the night.

Day 7: Plittersdorf - Gambsheim/Freistett - Strasbourg (Kehl), approx. 40 km
On your last cycle stretch, cycle in an easy pace directly alongside the river through the gentle Rhine plain until you reach the lock station of Gambsheim/Freistett. Your ship waits for you to bring you to Kehl con-nected by a bridge to the capital of the Alsace, the city of Strasbourg with its countless canals. If you feel like it you have the possibility to stroll to the Strasbourg Minster, the landmark of the city, through the picturesque tanners’ quarter with its small historic half-timbered houses and enjoy a piece of French lust for life while the end of your journey approaches. E-bikes | Electrical bikes | Pedeclecs

We provide you with modern quality e-bikes (pedelecs) with Nexus 8-speed hub gears, gradually selectable aid of pedaling power, puncture-proof tires and deep UNISEX comfort entry. The electric bikes from Velo de Ville are equipped exclusively with Bosch mid-mounted motors and fully integrated 500 Wh Bosch batteries. The design of the batteries allows them to almost disappear into the frame. This gives you better weight distribution and a low center of gravity without missing the convenience of easy entry. You save your battery by starting with as low a support as possible and increasing as needed. Please note that with the newer models of our e-bikes it is not possible to attach handlebar bags due to the additional fixed speedometers and wider handlebars.

IMPORTANT: Please reserve ebikes early, as they are only available in very limited numbers.

    Breakdowns

Bicycle breakdowns can happen, also when bikes are well serviced and maintained, flats can be fixed by yourself. If there’s a difficult repair, you may call the local representative. Please don´t get any repairs done on the bike without informing the touroperator/local representative and their approval.

    Own Bikes

If you bring your own bicycle, please pay attention to the following aspects: You are personally responsible for your own bike on board and ashore. Protect your bike against theft on board, as well as on land with a lock. The bikes will be brought on board and from board by the crew. Due to the local conditions we cannot prevent scratches and damages on the bikes. Please understand that we cannot accept any liability. The bikes on board are exposed to weather conditions because the parking is not covered. Please bring along your own spare material and repair kit for your bike.
