Vienna - Budapest

Tourmap

Route

Tour profile / Level 1-2

The tour is mostly flat and sometimes slightly hilly. The Austrian section follows well-maintained and equipped cycling paths, in Hungary you will often cycle on country back and side roads. Upon entering and leaving cities there is, but of course, traffic that must be closely observed!

Day 1: Vienna

Individual arrival.

Day 2: Vienna – Bad Deutsch-Altenburg/ surroundings, approx. 42 km

On the Danube-Cycle-Path you bike through the idyllic meadows along the Danube, passing the castle of "Orth" to Petronell-Carnuntum (significant roman excavations) or Bad Deutsch-Altenburg/surroundings.

Day 3: Bad Deutsch-Altenburg/ surroundings – Szigetköz, approx. 58 km

Still following the Danube-Cycle-Path you will reach Bratislava. Shortly after you reach Hungary, you bike through small typical villages using the dam cycle path (gravel) and country roads.

Day 4: Szigetköz – Györ, approx. 45 km

Cycling through the former marsh region of the "Little Alföld". Taking side roads you pass through delightful villages and arrive at the provincial capital of Györ.

Day 5: Györ – Komarom – Danube bend, approx. 57 km

You travel over the densely wooded hills of the "Gerecse" range. Some uphill stretches are rewarded with wonderful descents. In Esztergom you can admire the imposing cathedral. Tipp: Take the comfortable train between Györ and Komarom. Train tickets are available at the station from ticket machines and cost about €1 per trip.

Day 6: Danube bend – Budapest, approx. 50-67 km + ship/train

Steep mountain-slopes frame the picturesque landscape of the Danube Bend up to Szentendre island. Go by boat or transfer-bus (according to season) to Budapest. On the boat, the view on the sun deck is overwhelming. Note: Boat ride depending on the season at the beginning or end of the stage. Outside the boat season train ticket as a substitute.

Day 7: Budapest

Individual departure or extension.

    Hungary 2019

We would have appreciated a bit more options based on the biking level of the the team. For instance, in our case, our average speed was 15 km/h, and with a 60 km per day, we didn’t have enough time to visit around. So shorter steps would have been ...
