Romantic Rhine Cycle Path | Mainz - Cologne

The Classical Route

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile/ Level 1:

Very relaxed cycling in mostly flat terrain. The route along the Rhine runs almost exclusively on asphalted and paved hiking and cycling trails or along quiet country roads.

Day 1: Mainz

Individual arrival. In Mainz you should be well on time! Not just the Roman-Germanic central museum, the Gutenberg museum, the emperors cathedral and the electors castle are worth an ample visit.

Day 2: Mainz – Rüdesheim, approx. 35-49 km

The beautiful first stage leads you through rolling vineyards and well-known wine villages. The Rhine is flowing quite unhurriedly, forming little islands and broadening its bed up to 800 m width! Until you reach Rüdesheim you may visit the half-timbered town of Eltville and monastery Eberbach (+ 14 km), which are worth seeing.

Day 3: Rüdesheim – St. Goar, approx. 34 km

Pompous castles attract on your way. And you definitely should climb up to the Loreley! A hiking path leads up to this lovely spot and offers a beautiful sight to the narrowest part in the romantic Rhine Valley.

Day 4: St. Goar – Koblenz, approx. 36 km

Further on in the narrow Rhine Valley, the route firstly leads to Boppart. In this place it is quite turbulent, but if you wish you can go to "Vierseenblick" by cable car in densely wooded heights. Or you may visit the well preserved castle Marksburg and castle Stolzenfels on your further way to the ‚Deutsche Eck‘ in Koblenz.

Day 5: Koblenz – Bad Godesberg, approx. 61 km

Cosy health resorts and inviting wine villages vie for your visit! Thermal baths and beer gardens also want to regale you. Or you may have a break from cycling and go to an enjoyable boat trip on the Rhine. Between Koblenz and Bad Godesberg everything is possible!

Day 6: Bad Godesberg – Cologne, approx. 43 km

Bonn will be on your way and invites you for an ample visit until the Cologne cathedral comes into field of vision. The today’s stage isn’t that long so you will be quite early in your hotel which is located in the city centre. You will still have enough time to admire the manifold sights of Cologne.

Day 7: Cologne

Individual departure or extension.

    Bicycle

    Rental bikes

    Our 7- or 27-speed-bikes

The robust modern aluminium frame with moulded lower tube guarantees quiet running even in case of high "payload". Same applies to the steel forks. All frames are coated with a long-living and non-polluting powder lacquer showing the typical Velociped green. There are, of course, different types of frame available depending on the size of ladies and gentlemen, as the bike must fit the "rider".

And: all ladies’ bikes have a low opening that makes mounting and dismounting much easier.

All 7-speed tourers have wide and comfortable gel saddles with a cushioning that offers maximum comfort even in an upright position. The seat post has a quick release skewers in order to adjust the saddle size without tools.

    E-Bikes | Pedelecs

We use high-quality, sturdy and technically mature FLYER e-bikes produced by the Swiss manufacturers Biketec. The drive of e-bikes can be switched on and off, respectively at the touch of a button – at any time. Thus, you can make use of the motor for ascents or headwind only, or as permanent support enabling you to cover even larger and harder day trips without physical exertion. You’ll always reach your destination rested and relaxed. The Shimano 8-speed hub is equally graded, and the grip shifter ensures easy and smooth handling, also under load. You can therefore always select the optimal speed while at the same time using a smooth motor support.

Power is supplied to the motor by a 36 volt/12 ampere battery according to latest lithium-ion-polymer technology standards. The battery provides support for driving distances of up to approx. 100 km per charge. Recharging takes about 5 hours for completely discharged batteries. It is not necessary to wait until the battery is discharged, recharging is possible at any time.

Attention: Please reserve E-bikes early as they are always depending on availability.

    Equipment

Our bikes are equipped with a map holder at the handlebar, a waterproof pannier on the side of the bicylcle rack and a repair kit with a backup inner tube and an emergency kit.

    Bringing own bikes

Sure you are invited to bring you own bike which is already fitted best for your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival. Please note that we are not liable in case of damage, lost and theft. In case it breaks down, we will of course see to help you.

    Mainz to Cologne

Hotels generally OK. The Zum Baren was excellent. The Landsnecht was disappointing, no kettle in the room, too far out of town, meal only average and no way to get a warm drink after 9pm. We should have been told the Rhine was flooded and alternative ...
