Route

Tour profile / level 2

Guided, combined hotel and bike and boat tour on sand, gravel, or asphalt roads that require experience on the bike. However, daily mileage is not excessive and some stretches are completed by bus or boat. Landscape has rolling hills with some traffic.

Day 1: Bucharest

Individual arrival to Bucharest/Airport; 2 pm bus transfer (approx. 4h) to the starting point Tulcea in the Danube Delta; Embarkation on the comfortable floating hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Nufaru – Sfantu Gheorghe, approx. 31 km

Along the most southern Danube arm through the nature reserve Bestepe Hills. A wonderful view deep down into the Delta will make you forget some ascents. At the small fishing village Murighiol we enter into a maze of channels, floating islands, dense forests and a pure wilderness experience by boat. Overnight on hotelboat.

Day 3: The journey to mile “0”, approx. 25 km

A bumpy gravel path – on the right the open range of the Black Sea, on left side the lush green reeds and marsh land. In the loneliness of the Danube Delta Cormorants and great white Egrets are our permanent companions. Mile "0" at Sulina: the mighty Danube has reached their destination at the lighthouse and empties into the Black Sea, in a myriad of shades and unforgettable sunsets. Overnight on the hotelboat.

Day 4: Gulf of Musura – Crisan, approx. 23 km

Along the birds paradise Musura-Bay the way leads you to the picturesque village Letea. It seems as time stands still here. The houses made of reed and loam, lovely painted in blue and all surrounded by contemplative silence. Close to the village, located on a sandbank, a special wonder of nature can be observed – a tropical forest with climbing plants and lianes. We will reach the fishing village Crisan by boat. Overnight on the hotelboat.

Day 5: The Fauna & Flora of the Danube Delta, day of rest

During the boat ride through a labyrinth of narrow waterways we pass by small fishing villages and again experience the incredible diversity of the Fauna and Flora of the UNESCO World Heritage Danube Delta. In the afternoon we return from a surreal dream world to the vibrant town life of Tulcea. Overnight on the hotelboat.

Day 6: Monasteries of the Dobrogea, approx. 26 km

Round trip through a gently undulating landscape to the Orthodoxe monastery Celic Dere, the biggest convent of the Dobrogea territory. The beautiful monastery of Saon with their distinctive windmill is located amidst vineyards right on the bank of the Danube. From a ridge you have a fantastic view over the extensive and green floodplain directly on the border to the Ukraine. Transfer back to Tulcea. Overnight Tulcea guesthouse 4*.

Day 7: Lagoon-tour to the cape Dolosman, approx. 42 km

By bus to the old town Ceamurlia de Jos. The nature reserve of Cape Dolosman with the greek-roman excavations of Argamum seperates the Delta-lakes Golovita and Razim. By bike you reach the medieval fortress of Enisala, which is located high over the Danube. Let us enjoy a breathtaking view over the Lagoon Razim! Overnight Tulcea guesthouse 4*.

Day 8: Tulcea – Bucharest

After breakfast bus transfer back to the romanian capital Bucharest; arrival at the airport approx. 2 pm. Please do not book any flights before 4 pm. Possibility of additional nights in Tulcea or Bucharest.

    Facilities

The ship association exists of a raft with cabin tract, sun deck and restaurant as well as a main ship with an engine. Besides there is an accompanying boat that fetches the cyclists also from the narrowest canals of the delta and brings them back to the main ship and there is as well another small one with a platform especially for the bicycles.

In the air-conditioned restaurant typically Rumanian specialities are served - you are surprised from the ingenuity of the national kitchen!

Our floating hotels have transformed into very quiet islands. We have installed 24 kWh of solar panels and 60 kWh of lithium batteries to become more environmentally friendly and give our customers a whisper quiet experience in nature. So our floating hotels are using renewable energy and are self sustained.

    Cabins

The cozy cabins are equipped with separate beds and two windows. Showers and toilets are provided in each cabin. The windows can be openend. The cabins have a size of approx. 9 m² and no aircondition is installed in the cabins. However, the evenings on the water are not especially hot. The windows are equipped with insect protection, therefore you can enjoy your nights.

    Bicycle

    Bicycle & Equipment

Our bicycles are modern and high stardard quality of KTM. We offer 28-Zoll-Unisex-tourbikes with deep comfort-entrance. The bikes are equipped with 24-derailleur-gear (depending on ship) with override, caliper breaks and robust wheels. Our bicycles are mostly not older than 3 years. During the journey, you are liable for any damage, loss or theft. A corresponding bike insurance can be completed on board.

    The following bikes are available:

    • 24-speed touring bikes UNISEX* with comfort entry, hand brakes and freewheel and 28" tires in frame sizes 46 / 51 / 56 cm.
    • **NEW** E-bikes: Modern Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC with 12-speed gears and Bosch motor.

Men’s frames are available for men taller than 188 cm. Our trekking bikes are equipped with a spacious, waterproof pannier and a handy handlebar bag. The e-bike does not have a pannier rack, so we recommend taking a small rucksack with you, but the support bus is also always close by

    Bike breakdown

Can also occur with very new and good bikes. A puncture of the wheel will be fixed by the bike guide which will be with you.

    Private Bikes

You are welcome to bring your own bike. This is specially adapted to your needs, and of course you would like to have it on your biking trip.

Our employees have to lift all bicycles to and from the ship every day. Every kilo counts here. In order to protect the health of our crew, we can only accept bicycles without fixed superstructures (rear view mirrors, card holders, baskets, wheel arches, etc.), the max. Tare weight must not exceed 27 kg under any circumstances.

Do not forget to bring a tool bag with necessary keys and reserve hose and a lock and check the bike for functionality before you leave.
For your daily luggage a pannier bag will be provided on board.

We try to treat your bikes as gently as possible, but in rare cases small scratches or damage can not be completely avoided.

For organizational reasons, the bikes (including those owned by the customer) are sometimes not brought on board overnight, but are locked on the platform in front of the ship.

The bikes are parked on the second smaller boat (not covered), a parking of the bikes inside the ship is not possible for safety reasons.

Please note: neither the ship, nor the shipping company, our crew or RAD & REISEN are liable for any damage, loss or theft.
Furthermore, it is only possible to bring your own bike if you travel to Tulcea by car on your own. The included transfer bus cannot transport bikes.

    Useful

    Arrival - Parking - Departure

    Arrival by plane

    Airport: Bukarest/Otopeni (OTP), Baneasa (BBU)
Otopeni, (officially called Henri Coanda), Bucharest’s main airport: after getting off the plane and easing your way through the passport control, you’ll find yourself in the baggage reclaim area. Ignore all of the services on offer here. You should especially ignore the currency exchange desks: they do not offer decent rates. Instead, grab your luggage, which usually arrives promptly, and then it’s off through customs to the arrivals area. (If your luggage fails to arrive, head for the small office on the left hand side of the exit, where staff will help you find out where it might have gone). In the arrivals area, there are loads of ATMs, a press shop and a small cafe. To the right, there is a passage leading to the departures terminal: the passage is lined with car hire desks and a few shops, including a chemist.

    Transfer

Tranfer Tulcea from/to airport included on Day 1 and Day 8. Transfer not included if you extend your stay - see "Dates and Prices" for details.

Taxi transfer from airport - Bucharest
(necessary if you have booked pre or post tour nights in Bucharest):

To order a taxi by yourself, look for the multi-language touch screens in the arrivals hall. They are fully automated and very easy to use, and you can choose from the full range of Bucharest taxi companies: all have their tariffs clearly displayed. Once the taxi company of your choice has informed you (via the screen) how long the taxi will take to arrive, and what ID number the taxi has (take the ticket which will be printed), you simply go outside to wait for your taxi.

Just make sure you get into the correct taxi: check the company name and ID number with the one on your ticket. While most of the rip off taxis of yore have now gone, there are still sometimes touts hassling visitors inside the arrivals hall: ignore them. You should also ignore the sign saying ’Rapid Taxi.’ These are overpriced taxis allowed - for some unfathomable reason - to wait directly outside the internal arrivals terminal, underneath international arrivals.

Airport Baneasa: approx. 10 km away from Otopeni, is mostly used by low cost airlines.

    Participants

    Minimum: 12 guests
    Maximum: 20 guests

    Additional information

    Helmets
Bike helmet rental, free of charge. We recommand you to bring your own helmet with you.

    Private bicycles
on request - only possible if you arrive on your own directly to Tulcea as the transfer bus from Bucharest to Tulcea can not store bikes.

    General information
With our experienced local wildlife and bike guides you learn to recognize birds by their noise or in flight discover rare plants and animals, about the life of the Delta residents and the incredible eventful past of this region, which already fascinated the Romans, Greeks and Dacians. You are accommodated, on a modern 4* floating Hotel and in a family run, comfortable 4* guesthouse. The meals are traditional with fish, meat and vegetable, for lunch picnics or lunch packs will be offered. You bike in groups of 12-20 people. Therefore it is necessary to have some experience in bike tours. Sand- and gravel roads require a bit of physical condition, but should be succeed by everybody as the daily stretches are quite short. Some stretches are done by boat or bus. Itinerary is subject to change – in case of high forces (water level, through no fault of one’s own engine- or drive breakdown). Before and after your bike tour you also have the possibility to book extra nights in Tulcea or Bucharest.

Arrival to Hotel Berthelot in Bucharest
From the airport Henri Coandă (OTP) you reach the Hotel Berthelot with a taxi (depending on the traffic approx. 25min) or alternatively by public transport in approx. 40-50 min. From the airport, you can get directly to the city centre with a so called express bus line (line 783). Step off at the station "Roman Square" and then take further the bus 126 or 368 to Luterna Station. From there the hotel is within walking distance. You will find the bus stops directly in front of the arrival halls at the airport or at the exits at the train station in Bucharest.

If you travel to Bucharest by train, we recommend to take the metro and Bus or alternatively call a taxi for the way to the hotel. The hotel is approx. 2,2 km away from the northern train station in Bucharest (Gara de Nord). The next metro stations are Piata Romana (approx. 10min by foot to the hotel) or Izvor (approx. 20min by foot to the hotel). From the northern train station, take the line M1 direction Dristor until Piata Victorei. There you change to the line M2 in direction Berceni (1 station) until Piata Romana. From the Piata Romana you can also take the bus line 126 or 368 to Luterna Station. You can recognize the metro stations from the big "M".

How to buy / handle tickets for public transport
You can buy an electric card, which is called "Activ" or "Multiplu". At the purchasing shops or at ATM’s you usually can book money on this electric card (mostly up to 50 lei, approx. € 12,-). Depending on the line and public transport, you use, if you check in and check out on the buses, trams, and lines the amount of the ticket will be booked from your card. Normal tickets for the metro can also be purchased at all metro stations. You will find more information on the official homepage of public transportation in Bucharest: >>ratb.ro

informative guided tour of the Danube Delta in north-east Romainia.
