    Taste of Burgundy by Bike + Boat

    • Starting in the capital of Burgundy, Dijon, this Cycling & Sailing holiday follows the Canal of Burgundy and the river Saône until you reach the charming provincial town of Tournus.

      Who wouldn’t like to taste the Burgundy way of life in France?

      The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Burgundy are: delicious wines, impressive castles, rolling landscapes, old monasteries and a lot more.

      The highlights of times trip are: wine tasting of Burgundy wines - cruise by barge on the Saône river - visit the pearls of Burgundy: Dijon and Beaune and do not forget the trip by bike on wine trail in the Côte d’Or.

       

      Tour profile / level 2

      This tour is rated easy to moderate. The daily distances are no more than 60 km. The routes next to the river and canals is mostly flat, but can be undulating in places when you take routes further away from the river. You should have a good level of cycling fitness in order to enjoy this holiday to the full.

      Itinerary Dijon - Tournus

      Day 1: Dijon
      Individual arrival and embarkation in the afternoon at Dijon, the beautiful capital of Burgundy.

      Day 2: round trip Dijon, approx. 20 km
      In the morning you make a short cycling ride in the northwest Dijon region, along the Burgundy Canal and passing Lake Kir. Halfway, in the afternoon you’ll get the chance to discover the centre of Dijon by way of a special city walk.

      Day 3: Dijon - Longecourt en Plaine, approx. 45 km
      The day starts with a short sailing trip to and through the first two locks in the Burgundy Canal. You walk back to your bike and pedal through the region along a beautiful wine trail. Today’s trip ends in the village of Longecourt en Plaine.

      Day 4: Longecourt en Plaine - St. Jean de Losne, approx. 45 km
      Across small roads and forestries you cycle across some pretty villages to the town of Auxonne at the river Saône. Later you follow the river to St. Jean de Losne where the Burgundy Canal joins the river Saône.

      Day 5: St. Jean de Losne - Seurre, approx .45 km
      Today you start with a visit to the charming Musée de la Batellerie in St. Jean de Losne. Today’s cycling trip passes the Abbaye de Citeaux. Here’s a nice spot to have a picknick, at the small shop you can buy the famous abbey cheese. For a short while you will follow a trail along the river Saône. At the end of the day you arrive at the small town of Seurre.

      Day 6: Seurre - Chalon sur Saône, approx. 25 km
      You start cycling to the beautiful fortified town of Beaune, also known for its many tastefull wines (Côte d’Or). Your tour leader will take you on a stroll through town and you will have time to visit for example the church ‘Collegiale Notre-Dame’, the Hôtel Dieu or the Museum of Burgundy Wines. After the visit to Beaune you go by train to Chalon sur Saône, a port town located at the Saône river and the Canal du Centre.

      Day 7: Chalon sur Saône - Tournus, approx. 60 km
      You leave Chalon sur Saône and hit an old railway track, now a cycle path. In Buxy you visit the local winery. The trip continues by descending to the river Saône and ends in the town of Tournus. Here you will find the beautiful St. Philibert Church, which is certainly worth a visit. The abbey, dating from the 10th century, has a beautiful architecture and is one of the oldest in France.

      Day 8: Tournus - Dijon
      Disembarkation at 10:00 a.m., transfer by train to Dijon. Individual trip home or extended stay in France.

      Itinerary Tournus - Dijon

      Day 1: Tournus
      Individual arrival and train ride at 2.30 p.m. from Dijon - Tournus. Embarkation at 4 p.m. in Tournus.

      Day 2: Tournus - Chalon sur Saône, approx. 60 km
      From Tournus (Here you will find the beautiful St. Philibert Church, which is certainly worth a visit you cycle along an old railway track, now a cycle path to Buxy). There you visit the local winery.
      Afterwords you reach your todays overnight stay city Chalon sur Saôn.

      Day 3: Chalon sur Saône - Seurre, approx. 25 km

      ARRIVAL BY PLANE

      Airport: Dijon (DIJ), Lyon (LYS), Paris/Charles de Gaulle (CDG) / Orly (ORY)

      Paris has the nearest airport next to Dijon: ʻCharles de Gaulleʼ and ʻOrlyʼ.

      Airport: Charles de Gaulles
      Take the lin RER B to Gare du Nord. It runs every 15 min. and takes 20 min. to the center. There you change to RER D (directi on Makesherbes/ Melun) to Gare du Lyon. Continue by TGV to Dijon (approx. 1,5 hours)

      Airport Orly
      Take the Orly Val to Antony RER station where you change to RER B to Gare du Nord. There you change to RER A (direction Boissy-Saint-Leger = A2 or Chessy = A4). The next stop is Gare du Lyon where you catch the TGV to Dijon (approx. 1,5 hours)

      Airport Lyon

      Embarkation
      Departure place Dijon
      If your tour, starts in Dijon, you have to travel to the barge by yourself. The exact location is noted on your travel confirmation and see the itinerary and map in this booklet for how to get to the place of departure. The ti me of embarkati on is around 3 p.m. At the first
      day of the tour the barge will stay in Dijon. When you board, you will get the key for your cabin, so you can take your luggage there and enscone yourself. When all guests have arrived, the guide and skipper will give a welcome briefing.

      Departure place Tournus
      If your tour starts in Tournus, you will have a transfer by train from Dijon to Tournus. We kindly ask you to be at the meeting point at the train station of Dijon between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The meeting point with your tour leader is across from the Quick restaurant. The train will
      leave at 2:30 p.m. and you will be in Tournus one hour later, at 3:30 p.m.

      Disembarkation
      If your tour ends in Tournus, you will have a group transfer by train back to Dijon together with the tour leader. The train will depart around 10:30 a.m. and arrive in Dijon around noon!

      The barge is equipped to sail the French inland waterways. The large sun deck offers the passengers a nice sit during warm summer evenings. With a cool drink, served from the saloon with adjoining bar this is the place to be! Captain Arjan and his wife Daniëlla are ready to welcome you aboard!


      CATERING

      The cook on board is a member of the crew and prepares the breakfast, packed lunch and a warm dinner in the evening. The catering consists of full board. Catering starts with the dinner on the arrival day and ends with the breakfast on the departure day. Vegetarian catering is possible, please announce this with reservation and discuss it again with the tour guide on site.

      By popular demand, we have now invested in a considerable number of e-bikes, much favoured by cyclists who love the great Outdoors, but prefer to let the bike take the strain.

      With an electro bike every bike tour is a breeze! If you had few opportunities to cycle over the last weeks or if you are not sure concerning your fitness, but also with physical disabilities, every bike ride is a treat! The shiftable, low noise electric drive of our modern E-bike relieves you of some of the work and increases the pedal force up to 3 times ... So you can now book a bike tour together with cyclists who have different fitness level. Acclivity can be handled easily.
