Slovenia: The emerald tour

From the capital to the mediterranean coast

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / Level 2

Hilly, some short acclivities. For bikers in average shape.

Day 1: Ljubljana

Individual arrival.

Day 2: Ljubljana – Vrhnika, approx. 41 km

A relaxed start to the trip takes you through the varied plains around the capital. You cycle through a 160 km² marshland landscape with rich flora and fauna and pass the impressive Borovnica railroad viaduct. In summer, the Podpec karst lake is a great place for a refreshing break. Shortly before Vrhnika, the Technical Museum of Slovenia in Bistra Castle is well worth a visit.

Day 3: Vrhnika – Postojna, approx. 43 km

On this day, you will explore remote roads off the beaten track. A detour takes you to the impressive Predjama fortress, which is spectacularly built into a 123-metre-high rock face. There you will learn the story of the bold knight Erasmus, who fooled an army through secret cave entrances. A guided tour also reveals the less heroic story of his end - literally with his pants down.

Day 4: Postojna – Štanjel area, approx. 32 km

The Postojna Caves, an impressive 21-kilometer-long cave system, have already delighted almost 30 million visitors. During the 1.5-hour tour, you will experience a magical world of colorful stalactites and stalagmites as well as the rare “human fish” that live in the dark waters of the cave. In the afternoon, you will reach the vineyards of the Vipava region.

Day 5: Štanjel area – Lipica – Divaca, approx. 50 km

The romantic village of Štanjel towers above the Karst plateau. Through sleepy villages and inviting vineyards you reach Lipica - home of the world-famous white Lipizzaner horses. Those interested in history can visit the impressive military collection in the Lokev defense tower.

Day 6: Divaca – Muggia, approx. 39 km

If you missed the Postojna Caves, today you have the opportunity to explore the UNESCO-protected Škocjan Caves, known for their impressive beauty. Afterwards, Socerb Castle awaits you with a panoramic view of the Bay of Trieste and the Julian Alps. Your destination is the charming Muggia south of Trieste. Relax with a gelato in the historic center or on the beaches. If you like, you can take a short detour to Trieste, a city full of history and cosmopolitan flair.

Day 7: Muggia – Piran, approx. 35 km

Cycle along the coastal road on a new cycle path along the former railroad line. Enjoy the view of the Slovenian coast and Trieste. A coffee stop in the fashionable town of Portorož is a must. The tour ends in the beautiful Venetian harbor village of Piran.

Day 8: Piran

Individual departure or extension.

Too many busy roads

There were many highlights but the route was mainly road based with some stretches busy and others almost suicidal and this was the off season. The hotels were good, scenery good, weather iffy and once at the coast better cycling. Technical museum, Postogna ...

Slovenia is a beautiful country, this was our fifth trip with Rad & Reisen and we thought that in terms of the scenery that we cycled through it was probably the best yet. Hotels were generally of a good standard, in one of them the room was a bit smoky ...
