Carinthian lakes roundtrip

The Austrian Riviera invites you...

Itinerary

Route

The bike tour runs largely on well-developed bike paths, often directly along the lake shore. In some sections, the route runs along federal highways without bike paths. The route is mostly flat, with some slight hills. The route is ideal for e-bikes.

Individual arrival in Villach. The silence of the mountains, the gentle shores of crystal-clear lakes, pure nature – located in the heart of Carinthia, the region around Villach reflects all this diversity.

The tour begins heading north to Lake Millstatt, which is completely surrounded by a cycle path. You will discover the unspoilt southern shore, where there are no roads and you can enjoy breathtaking views of the lake in many places. Along the way, you will pass through typical Carinthian villages such as Döbriach, which lies directly on the lake shore. Along the north shore, you will cycle partly directly along the lake to Seeboden, your destination for today.

Today you start at Lake Millstatt. From here you cycle through the Drau Valley to Greifenburg and from there it’s uphill to Lake Weissensee. If you don’t feel confident enough to do this, you can avoid the climb with a transfer (included). Once you arrive at Lake Weissensee, you continue by ferry (included). After arrival, you cycle on to your destination for the day in the Drau Valley.

Today, you will head south from the Drau Valley. Your destination for today is Lake Faaker See. It is the emerald of Carinthia’s lakes, not very large, but very warm and turquoise like the Caribbean Sea. On the way, you will pass typical Carinthian villages and Villach again. Once you arrive at your destination, you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the lake.

In the morning, cycle from Lake Faaker See along the Drau River towards Lake Wörthersee. Before Velden, turn off into the idyllic Keutschacher Seental valley, where charming lakes line your route. The destination for this stage is Klagenfurt with its Renaissance old town, small bars, and shops. Visit the Museum of Modern Art or the Carinthian Museum, or enjoy the view from the Stadtpfarrturm tower.

The last stage of your bike tour begins again heading north. From Klagenfurt, you cycle towards Feldkirchen. Shortly before you reach Feldkirchen, turn off towards Lake Ossiach, Carinthia’s third largest lake after Lake Wörthersee and Lake Millstatt. Nestled idyllically in the surrounding mountains, you will be welcomed by inviting bathing resorts and the romantic Ossiach Abbey. The dark green color of the water is something special. From here, you return to Villach, the final destination of your bike tour.

Individual departure or extension of your stay.

Cycling the lakes in Carinthia

Excellent cycling routes, well documented in English, the tour operator's arrows were helpful and signposted accurately. However, some of the text of the English version route guide needs checking, as LEFT and RIGHT were sometimes the wrong way round. ...
