North of Holland by Bike + Boat DE HOLLAND

open water, flat rural land, picturesque harbour towns - the "Northern tour"

    • During this fascinating cycling cruise on board the ship De Holland you will discover the best of what the beautiful Provinces of North-Holland and Friesland offer. Explore flat “polder” landscapes – a polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments – the North Sea coast, towering sand dunes, long sandy beaches, historic windmills, the island of Texel and the many picturesque harbor towns along the coast of IJsselmeer Lake. It is without doubt a tour not to be missed!

Nowhere else in the world will you find an area as fascinating as the Dutch Provinces of North Holland and Friesland, two areas rich in tradition. Over the course of your week, you will be able to discover typical Dutch culture and cycle through a flat “polder land”, extensively reclaimed over the centuries from the North Sea and the former Southern Sea (now IJsselmeer). What you will soon realize is the truth behind the proverb “God created the earth but the Dutch made Holland”, such has been the extent of land reclamation in the region you will be cycling through. Since the 17th century in an effort to save disappearing land from encroaching water, protective dikes have been built, low lying land has been pumped dry and tidal dams have been created in creeks to prevent flooding, with the result that today’s green flat polder landscape is full of agricultural enterprise.

Given the Dutch love for cycling, the region is crisscrossed with many quiet cycle tracks that stretch from one end of the region to the other. You will be amazed by the beauty of the North Sea beaches, the towering sand dunes – who said there were no hills in Holland! – the extremely bicycle friendly island of Texel, the beautiful flat landscapes, small dreamlike farm villages and romantic picturesque harbor villages. During the second part of the tour you will cross the large lake IJsselmeer to Stavoren in the Province of Friesland. Other highlights during your week tour include the open air museum “Zaanse Schans”, the historic city center of Alkmaar and the old harbor cities of Medemblik, Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Volendam, the  islands of Texel and Marken and – of course – Amsterdam with its beautiful canals.

      Tour profile / Level 1

Flat, asphalted bike paths and side roads, ideal for children. If you don’t want to cycle, you can stay on the house boat.

      Day 1: Amsterdam

Individual Arrival. Embarkation and check-in where the crew will welcome you on board bettween 2 and 5 p.m. Take the opportunity to go shopping or explore downtown Amsterdam, world famous for its canals, its quirky ‘leaning’ buildings, museums, the Anne Frank House, the Waterlooplein Flea Market, the Dam Square in the historical center and heart of the city. A canal tour is a unique way to see the capital of Holland from another side. Welcome meeting, cocktail, dinner and first briefing on board. First night on board in Amsterdam.

Day 2: Amsterdam - Zaanse Schans - Zaandam - Alkmaar, Alkmaar - Enkhuizen by coach, approx. 44 km

The first bike trip of this tour takes you via small villages through the beautiful flat and green polder landscape. The first stop is at the Zaanse Schans open air museum (free entry) with its traditional Old Dutch wooden houses, windmills and the cheese- and clog factory. After this visit you will cycle through the “Land of Leeghwater”, a green polder area between Amsterdam, Alkmaar and Hoorn. Stroll through the former whaler’s village De Rijp and pass by the windmills of Schermerhorn. Your cycling tour ends in the historical centre of Alkmaar. All bicycles will be parked and stored safely and monitored in Alkmaar. At the end of the afternoon a coach will bring you back to “De Holland” in Enkhuizen, a beautiful 17th century town at the banks of the lake IJsselmeer with a rich cultural and maritime tradition.

Day 3: Enkhuizen - Alkmaar by coach, Alkmaar - Den Helder, approx. 33 - 40 km

After breakfast a coach will bring you back to Alkmaar, where today’s bike tour starts. Today you can discover the beautiful coastal area of North-Holland: an approx. 70 km (45 miles) long strip with forest, heathland and sand dunes and of course the wide sandy beaches of the North Sea. On the route — and certainly worth a visit — is the artist’s village of Bergen. Then you will bike all the way through the dunes and along the coast and beaches northward, to the navy harbour of Den Helder. There is a 17 km (10.5 mi.) shorter option if you do not cycle to Den Helder, but to Schagen instead, and take the train (limited capacity for bicycles - approx. 30 min. - train tickets approx. € 13.00 not included) to Den Helder. After dinner visit and guided tour (incl.) of the light ship museum in Den Helder. Night on board in Den Helder.

Day 4: Round trip North Sea island of Texel from/to Oudeschild, approx. 15 – 65 km

During breakfast De Holland will cross the Marsdiep, a deep tide-race between Den Helder and Texel Island to the harbor of Oudeschild.**
You will quickly understand why the island of Texel is a favorite destination for many tourists as you cycle around this enchanting Dutch island. Charming villages, beautiful beaches and areas of natural importance are crisscrossed by a network of cycling tracks, making all areas of the island easily accessible. Swim at one of the wide sandy beaches, visit the seal sanctuary "Ecomare" and/or cycle the beautiful "Thijsse-route" (with signposting, approx. 25 miles) through picturesque villages and landscapes. At the end of your cycling tour you can enjoy a locally brewed beer during a visit to the small brewery in the harbor of Oudeschild. In the evening the Angela Esmee will return to Den Oever on the mainland. The highlight of the evening will be a night of live music on board.

Day 5: Round trip Stavoren, approx. 43 – 55 km

The vessel will cross the large inland lake IJsselmeer to sail to Stavoren in the Province of Friesland. You can opt for a shorter or longer cycling tour: discover the nature area of Gaasterland or explore a part of the wide lake district, that Friesland is well-known for. You can also combine both options. Night in Stavoren, one of the famous 11 cities of Friesland.

      Day 6: Medemblik - Hoorn - Enkhuizen, approx. 30 - 50 km

Sail to Medemblik during breakfast. Take the short pedaling from Medemblik along the IJsselmeer (former "Zuiderzee") coast directly to Enkhuizen, where you can spend the afternoon. Enkhuizen is an old city with many centuries of maritime tradition. The "herring city" boasts a beautiful old harbor, an historical old town center and the very interesting "Zuiderzeemuseum". If you prefer a longer cycling tour, ride from Medemblik to the former Dutch East India Company town of Hoorn, in the 17th century one of the world’s leading harbors and name giver of Cape Horn. Enjoy your lunch break and make a short stroll of the old city. Continue by bike through some picturesque rural villages to Enkhuizen. In the evening you can enjoy a short city walking tour.

      Day 7: Volendam – Waterland – Amsterdam, approx. 35 – 50 km

During breakfast the ship will sail to Volendam. Your final day of cycling will lead you through the beautiful area of ‘Waterland’ with its hundreds of small lakes and tiny canals. Recommended (extra miles) is a detour to the former island of Marken, to continue through the water shaped region of Waterland back to the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer. If you didn’t go for a canal tour on the first day, you will have the opportunity to do so today.

      Day 8: Amsterdam

      Individual departure. Disembarkation after breakfast.

    • Welcome on Board DE  HOLLAND!

DE HOLLAND is a 257 ft. long and 24 ft. wide cozy, small river cruise ship. The vessel has 34 staterooms for max. 68-72 passengers. All staterooms are well-equipped outside cabins. The lower deck has 24 twin cabins. All cabins (approx. 108 sq.ft.) have an individual climate control system, digital TV, mini-safe, small wardrobe, hair dryer, 230V sockets, 2 single beds (78 x 31 inches) and a private bathroom with shower, toilet and bath products and a window (2.55 ft. x 1.28 ft.) that - for safety reasons - cannot be opened. Three “regular” twin cabins in the front have single beds, set in L-shape, and an additional Pullman Bed as optional third bed. Five twin cabins and 16 “superior” twin cabins have separate beds, set next to each other as a hotel style bed (78 x 62 inches). The difference between twin and superior twin cabins on the lower deck is their location in relation to engine room, stairs and salon and/or (in 3 cases) beds set in L-shape (optional triple cabin).

The upper deck offers 9 identical superior twin cabins (accommodation: s. lower deck) and 1 suite. The suite (approx. 140 sq. ft.) has the same amenities as the superior twin cabins, but is larger and – in addition – also has a mini-bar and a sofa bed as optional third bed. All upper premium deck cabins and the suite have a “French Balcony” (floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors) instead of a regular window.

Beds in most cabins are normally set as hotel-style beds (78 x 62 inches) or, optional, on previous request, can be arranged as 2 separate single beds (78 x 31 inches). DE HOLLAND has a large salon with large panoramic windows on the upper deck that combines the restaurant, bar and a lounge area. Wi-Fi is available for guests in the salon (limited data packages included / additional data packages can be purchased online). On the partially roofed sun deck, chairs and sun loungers invite for a stay.  Bicycles will be stored on a separate part of the sun deck.

    • Rental-Bicycles & equipment

Our ship owned bikes to rent are most modern

      • UNISEX-touring/trekking bicycles with a comfortable, deep entrance and
      • 7-speed-hub circuit with hand pedal brake, as well as paniers.
      • other bikes: children’s bike, tandem, children’s seat, bikes with back pedal... on request

      Electric bikes | E-Bikes | Pedelecs

On some barges we offer modern quality-electrically assisted bikes (Pedelecs) with 7 or 8-gear-hub circuit, gradual selectable help of pedaling power and deep UNISEX-comfot-entrance. The bikes are equipped with a powerful Panasonic or Bosch-Pedelec-Engine and a powerful Lithium-Ion-Battery, one battery-charge is sufficient for up to 65 kilometers. The range of the battery is depending on supportlevel, riding manners, body weight and terrain. In a more hilly terrain or with a higher bodyweight there is more batterycapacity used then in flat areas or with a low bodyweight. You can save battery, when you start with most possible low support and increase only if needed. The batteries are supposed to be charged overnight with the provided battery charger.

IMPORTANT: book early, because of limited capacity!

A note to our customers: Electric bikes are a great thing! However, due to their characteristics (high weight + high speed) they should only be booked by very experienced and safe cyclists with a good sense of balance. E-bikes are not appropriate for persons who do not ride bikes frequently.

      Bicycle breakdowns
can happen, also when bikes are well serviced and maintained. Flats can be fixed by yourself. If there’s a difficult repair you may call the local representative. Please don’t get any repairs done on the bike without informing the tour operator/local representative and their approval.

      Bringing of own bikes

If you bring your own bicycle, please pay attention to the following aspects: You are personally responsible for your own bike on board and ashore. Protect your bike against theft on board, as well as on land with a lock. The bikes will be brought on board and from board by the crew.

Due to the local conditions we cannot prevent scratches and damages on the bikes. Please understand that we cannot accept any liability. The bikes on board are exposed to weather conditions because the parking is not covered. Please bring along your own spare material and repair kit for your bike.

In the Netherlands it is not mandatory to wear a helmet.
