Route

Tour profile:

The cycling tours lead you on paved bike paths, and side roads with less traffic. There are no uphill climbs.

Day 1: Amsterdam – Monnickendam/Volendam

Individual arrival. Embarkation between 1 and 2 pm. After all guests have checked in, the ship will sail to Monnickendam or Volendam. After dinner you will have time for a short walk into the city center.

Day 2: Monnickendam – Volendam – Hoorn, approx. 32 - 51 km

Today starts with a drive to a family run cheese farm and wooden shoe store. Here you can observe the production and also taste a little bit of the cheese. Then continue along the dikes to Purmerend, located in the heart of the polder De Beemster and about 3.5 m below sea level. Your next destination is Edam, a beautiful town whose alleys and canals are worth a walk. Edam is of course famous for its cheese covered with red or yellow wax.
Across the main dike of the IJsselmeer you will finally reach the promenade of Volendam, where the ship has docked. Here you will have some time for a short stroll before dinner. In the late evening the ship continues to Hoorn.

Day 3: Hoorn – Enkhuizen – Urk, approx. 28 - 39 km

Today’s bike tour leads through rural villages to Enkhuizen. You will pass the windmill De Krijgsman (the Warrior), the highest windmill in North Holland and one of the few old windmills still grinding flour. Enkhuizen is home to many impressive mansions, canals, churches and city walls that still reflect the city’s rich history. If the weather is nice, in the afternoon you will sail across the IJsselmeer to the traditional fishing town of Urk. On board, you can assist the captain with the sailing if you wish. Or you can just sit back and enjoy the trip.

Day 4: Urk – Vollenhove, approx. 37 km

After breakfast the Elizabeth takes you to the "new land". From Schokkerhaven you start your bike tour along the polders. You cycle along the water to the former island of Schokland, which has been completely surrounded by the mainland since land reclamation. A museum documents the history of the small island, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Beautiful bike paths lead along the former coastline. You continue your bike tour through the polders to the charming former fishing village of Vollenhove.

Day 5: Vollenhove – Giethoorn, approx. 37 - 49 km

From Vollenhove, bike paths lead through the open countryside to the small town of Blokzijl. Here begins the National Park Weerribben-Wieden, with the largest marshland in northwestern Europe. An oasis of peace for plants, animals and people. In the middle of the national park a cycle path leads far away from the hustle and bustle and you can completely immerse yourself in the silence of this area. With a little luck you may spot a kingfisher or even an otter (the symbol of the park). Continue through Kalenberg, a village that until the 1950s was only accessible by boat. A winding route through a rural landscape with narrow fields surrounded by dikes leads you to the beautiful town of Giethoorn.

Day 6: Giethoorn – Lelystad, sailing day

Today you can take a full sailing day and make yourself comfortable on board. If you wish, you can assist the captain with the sailing again. In the early afternoon, the Elizabeth arrives in Lelystad, the capital of Flevoland province. Flevoland consists almost entirely of land reclaimed from the IJsselmeer. In the evening, after the ship has docked at the harbor, you will enjoy a real captain’s dinner on board.

Day 7: Lelystad – Blocq van Kuffeler – Amsterdam, approx. 20 - 29 km

In the morning you can visit the interesting Batavia shipyard. Or you can go to Batavia Stad, an outlet center with many famous brands. After breakfast your last bike tour starts. You will cycle through the Oostvaardersplassen, an almost untouched natural area. Parts of this route wind through forested areas, while others offer panoramic views of vast grasslands and marshes. This is a true paradise for birdwatchers. The ship will be waiting for you in the small harbor of Oostvaardersdiep to sail you back to Amsterdam.

Day 8: Amsterdam

After breakfast disembarkation until 9.30 am. Individual departure or extension in Amsterdam.
