King Ludwig Bike Path: Roundtrip from Munich

on the king’s trace

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile: Level 2

You cycle on well-marked and paved cycle paths (Isar-, Lake Constance-Königssee- and Via Bavarica Tyrolensis-cycle paths) as well as on quiet side roads (only on short sectors on main roads) and a few unpaved but well drivable distances. A few short climbs can be overcome easily sliding.

Day 1: Munich

Individual arrival in the Bavarian capital, which attracts visitors from all over the world with its many attractions. Particularly worth seeing are the English Garden with its Chinese Tower, the Frauenkirche (1 tower ascent included), Nymphenburg Palace and Marienplatz. Visit one of the many beer gardens and enjoy the hospitality and Bavarian flair over a beer.

Day 2: Munich – Lake Starnberg, approx. 35-60 km

Your first bike tour takes you southwest of Munich via the Weßlinger and Pilsen lakes to the Ammersee, the third largest lake in Bavaria. Take a short break in Herrsching to enjoy the fantastic view of the lake. Passing the Andechs Monastery, you will reach Lake Starnberg, which is considered to be King Ludwig II’s favorite place. Those who prefer to take it easy can also cycle directly to Lake Starnberg.

Day 3: Lake Starnberg round trip, approx. 50 km

Today you will circle Lake Starnberg, a unique jewel in Bavaria. Explore the small villas and castles along the way and cycle to the votive chapel in Berg on Lake Starnberg. This was built in memory of King Ludwig II.

Day 4: Lake Starnberg – Staffelsee/Kochelsee, approx. 45-65 km

Along the eastern side of Lake Starnberg you cycle to Seeshaupt. Shortly before there is a nice bathing area where you can cool off in hot weather. An insider tip is the fantastic view over the romantic Riegsee, before you reach the Staffelsee. Alternatively, a section can be covered by boat (not included).

Day 5: Excursion Garmisch-Partenkirchen, ca. 40-60 km

Today’s bike tour will take you along the crystal-clear Loisach River to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Take the Zugspitze train up to the highest peak in Germany. The train ride back to Staffelsee is included.

Day 6: Staffelsee – Schwangau/Füssen, approx. 60 km

Today you start with a bike tour along the largest moorland in Central Europe, the Murnauer Moos. Past the moorland spa in Bad Kohlgrub, you will reach the beautiful Allgäu region. Be enchanted by King Ludwig’s fairytale castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.

Information: The castles can be visited independently. However, they are not located exactly on the cycle route and guided tours are not included in the tour price.

Day 7: Schwangau/Füssen – Forggensee – Munich, approx. 30 km + train ride

On your last day of cycling, you start with a round trip around Lake Forggensee. Take a break at one of the many bathing spots and enjoy the view of the Allgäu Alps. The journey back to Munich is by train from Füssen (included, duration approx. 2 hours).
