Danube Cycle Path Short & Sweet / Passau - Vienna

    Enjoyable short-trip

    • Would you like to cycle along the mighty Danube River, but are short on available time? If that’s the case, then this is the perfect tour for you.

This direct and to the point tour guides you from Passau to Vienna, one of the most popular cycling paths in Europe. Over the course of six days of cycling you will ride approximately 35 miles per day, with the rest of your time free to explore this beautiful region.

The ideal combination of cycling and Austrian hospitality will ensure you to have more than enough time to relax and to visit many of the cultural highlights along the Danube.

      >> Alternative offer: floating hotel

      Tour profile:

The cycling path is completely paved from one end to the other, flat, almost always directly along the riverbank and is very suitable for beginners and children.

      Day 1: Passau

Individual arrival. Once in Passau enjoy your day of leisure by strolling through the narrow and winding streets of this quaint city or simply relax in a typical beer garden. Historical heritage is to be found and encountered around every corner. For centuries the ‘City of Three Rivers’ - i.e. the rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz - have been an inspiration to all who visit Passau, as it is sure to be for you. Between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. bike hand over – for late arrivals on the next morning.

      Day 2: Passau – Linz, approx. 53 km + ship ride Passau-Schlögen

Starting the tour nice and easy by ship, you travel through the magnificent Schlögener Loop. The Granite Mountains of the Mühlviertel have forced the Danube into a 180-degree bend. Along the wooded lush slopes of the narrow green valley, the river escorts you to the capital of Upper Austria and European Culture Capital of 2009: Linz.

Day 3: Linz – Strudengau, approx. 60 km

A worthwhile excursion to Enns, the oldest town in Austria, is highly recommended although it is left up to you to decide. In the gorgeous Baroque village Grein, a few highlights including Austria’s oldest theatre, the Maritime Museum and the city’s impressive castle Greinburg can be visited.

Day 4: Strudengau – Nibelungengau, approx. 46 km

Once leaving Grein, you cycle through the stunning Nibelungengau over to Pöchlarn, where you find the monument of Nibelungen and the birthplace of artist Oskar Kokoschka. From a distance and high above the Danube, one of the most famous buildings in the region, the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, salutes you with grandeur.

Day 5: Nibelungengau – Vienna, approx. 48 km + train ride Krems - Wien

Today you will experience the captivating landscape of the Wachau Valley where you pass through the extremely romantic winery villages of Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. From there you visit Krems, the 1000-year-old wine growing town complete with its gothic architecture. From Krems you travel by train to the city of Waltz, Vienna.

    • Bicycles inclusive panniers:

The offered bikes are touring bikes with an aluminium frame and kitted with responsive brakes and gears. Plus: mudguards, trip computers, comfort gel saddles, flat-palmed grips, Schwalbe Marathon anti-puncture tyres.

You can choose between the following bikes:

      • 7-speed-bike with hand brake and backpedal brake
      • 21-speed-bike with hand brakes
      • E-bikes unisex, also for children (min. 130cm)
      • children seat, children trailer

with 28" tyres in different frame dimensions for ladies and gents.

All bikes are equipped with a one-sided Ortlieb pannier (20 liters) and a handlebar bag/room.

Our modern e-bikes (pedelecs) are quality branded bikes with hub gear, freewheel, powerful electric motor and gradually selectable pedal assistance. The battery range depends on support level, driving style, body weight and terrain. The more hilly the railing, the higher the body weight, the more battery capacity is consumed. You save your battery by starting with as low support as possible and increasing it if necessary.

Tip: E-bikes are a great development, but should be - due to their driving characteristics (high weight + high speed) - booked only by very safe and experienced cyclists with a very good sense of balance. Not suitable are electric bikes for people who rarely ride a bicycle.

Please note that it won’t be possible to fix the handlebar bags on some of our E-Bikes.

      Bicycle breakdowns

can happen even with new wheels and by best servicing. With the rental bikes you will receive repair vouchers which you can present in our authorised workshops along the way. Should a repair not be possible, please contact our service number! In a few hotels/guest houses we have some bikes on stock if you need to change them during the trip.

      Private bicycles

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle. It is adapted especially to your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival.

For the return journey to Passau we recommend the reservation of the bus transfer or the train ride - some trains offer bicycle-parking possibilities, however those are limited and a reservation is necessary.

      My comments about the trip.

There was no personal service. It would have been nice when we picked up our bikes if the person could have told us a little about the route and how the map works. We are from the United States and did not know how the trains work. It would be nice to ...
