Route

Tour profile:

The path is completely paved from one end to the other, flat, almost always directly along the riverbank and is also very suitable for beginners and children.

Day 1: Passau

Individual arrival. Use the remaining time for a city tour or go for a walk through the picturesque old part of the “City of Three Rivers”. Until 4 p.m. you take over your bikes – for late arrival, in the next morning.

Day 2: Passau – Eferdinger Becken, approx. 55 km + ship ride Passau – Kasten

Starting in Passau, the Danube flows through the densely forested slopes of the narrow valley in the “Bavarian Forest” until it reaches the gorgeous Danube Loop in Schlögen. Here we recommend a walk up to the famous „Schlögener Blick“. From there you have a fantastic view over this fascinating region. By bike you will continue to Brandstatt/ surroundings.

Day 3: Eferdinger Becken – Mitterkirchen/surroundings, approx. 55 km + train ride Ottensheim – Linz

Today’s bike leg guides you to the Upper-Austrian capital city of Linz, featured with its numerous cultural attractions. In the morning you ride to Ottensheim train station, where the train takes you to Linz. After a walking tour of the charming old-town square, your day tour moves on to the town of Enns (the oldest town in Austria). On the way, you will pass many impressive farms and buildings (square-yarded farmhouses which are typical for this region). Don’t miss the chance to visit the pre-historical museum in Mitterkirchen.

Day 4: Mitterkirchen/surroundings – Strudengau, approx. 35 km

Today you will bike through an extremely fascinating landscape. In this region, the narrow passages of the Danube (seen as a vortex) have been frightening captains and sailors since the ancient times. Grein, the quaint little romantic town with its castle and the oldest theatre in Austria, is certainly worth a visit.

Day 5: Strudengau – Wachau, approx. 50 km

This day you will reach the Wachau region. A very old winegrowing culture awaits you here. The terraced vineyards grown on the steep southern slopes of “Heaven’s Stairs” along the Danube, make this region unique in its landscape and beauty. Don’t miss a wine tasting at one of the numerous wine-taverns where you can sample the mouth-watering wines of this region. Once at the ruins of Aggstein, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the jewels of the Wachau (Spitz, Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein).

Day 6: Wachau – Krems/surroundings, approx. 30 km

Today you pass through the vineyards of the world-famous Dürnstein. A short but steep walk up to the ruins gives you an enchanting view over the Wachau region. From here you only have a short distance until you reach the city of Krems and your accommodation at a typical vineyard in this region.

Day 7: Krems/surroundings – Vienna, approx. 40 km + train ride Krems – Tulln

By train you will depart from this unique UNESCO World Cultural Heritage region. After arriving in Tulln, you will ride your bike for the last time on this tour, through the Vienna Woods (Wiener Wald) and pass through “The Gates of Vienna”. Along the way you will see the Monastery of Klosterneuburg and then continue on to the city of music: Vienna.

Day 8: Vienna

Some say that one must personally and even intensively experience this great city. A few of the must-sees include the famous “Naschmarkt”, the City Opera, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and of course the gorgeous imperial castle Schönbrunn. Extension at Vienna or train ride back to Passau (Season 1+2) or comfortably by bus (season 3).
