    Take time to explore Budapest’s imperial and art nouveau highlights, take a comprehensive tour through beautiful Bratislava with its baroque and gothic buildings and fountains and discover why Vienna is called the ‘Waltz Capital’. After a great day of cycling and exploring relax onboard the MS Carissima while listening to live music, or you could even head out to do more discovering on foot.

    The cycle route is completely flat, at times on a gentle downhill slope and is ideal for cyclists with less experience and children. The tour is rated easy and you cycle on mostly flat terrain.

    Höhenprofil Passau-Budapest

    Day 1: Passau

    Boarding time at 4:30 p.m. Located at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers, Passau has numerous of interesting sites to visit. Use your free time and stroll through the cobblestoned old town centre, listen to the bells of Passau’s Gothic Town Hall or have a look at the world’s largest Catholic Church organ in the Passau Cathedral. At 6.00 p.m. we cast off!

    Day 2: Great Loop/Engelhartszell-Aschach approx. 42 km

    Your first day’s cycling begins with a ride through the classic scenery of the ‘Great Loop’ Donauschlinge - one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube. Along the way you will encounter tiny villages and cozy cider taverns. In Austria’s only Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell you can taste their delicious liquors and cheese. The famous ‘Schlogener View’ provides a wonderful panorama of the surrounding Austrian countryside. The boat welcomes all cyclists back on board in the charming market town of Aschach.

    Day 3: Devin - Bratislava, approx. 43 km

    You pedal along the former ‘Iron Curtain’, cross the green line and reach the imposing Imperial Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens. Follow the bike path through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ to the coronation city of Bratislava and the slopes of the little Carpathians and discover the hidden alleyways and sights of Bratislava on an optional city tour.

      Enjoy a comfortable sightseeing tour of Bratislava with a so-called Oldtimer train. The tour starts at the harbour and leads you past the famous Saint Martin’s Cathedral – the former coronation church for Hungarian Kings – and the Church of the Trinitarian Order. You drive past the Grassalkovich-Palais, the present residence of the Slovakian president and the Information Centre of the European Union. The little train will wait for you while you walk through the Viennese Gate to the Ehrenhof castle where you have a beautiful view of the Old Town. Afterwards the Oldtimer takes you back down from the hill and leaves you at the St. Michael’s Gate. Together with your guide you discover the historic centre walking from here to the Slovakian National Theatre.

    Day 4: Budapest I Szentendre, approx. 54km

    The entrance to Budapest, Hungary’s capital is stunning. Savour the beauty of Budapest during a coach tour or a guided bike tour (optional) to discover many of the highlights of this handsome city. You can also choose to cycle to the charming town of Szentendre with its Mediterranean atmosphere and lively art scene. You will get a very close experience of Hungarian culture at an evening show with traditional music and dance (optional).

      Accompanied by an experienced bike guide you will visit you will get to know the best sights with your bike. You cross the Danube on the famous Chain Bridge, and cycle past the Parliament building, cross the Liberty Square, and City Park, and get to the Heroe’s Square.

      We invite you to a traditional Hungarian Csarda, where you´ll be welcomed with gypsy music and "palinka" (licor). Get carried away by the fervid music and traditional folk dances while tasting traditional gulash soup and local wines. Afterwards you will drive through the town, and up to Gellért Hill  from where you will enjoy an amazing view of the illuminated town. Return to the ship at approx. 11 p.m.

    Day 5: Danube bend - Esztergom, approx. 43km

    The wooded hills of Pilis, Visegrád and Börzsöny together with the meandering Danube create a wonderful landscape that has become a nature lover’s paradise. Situated in the middle of the Danube River the idyllic isle of Szentendre exudes silent Puszta romance. You cycle via the baroque village of Vác (influenced by the architects of Austria’s empress Maria Theresia) to the bishop town of Esztergom with its gorgeous basilica – Hungary’s largest Catholic Church.

    Day 6: Vienna (day of rest)

    Discover Vienna’s most beautiful attractions. During a city tour by bike or bus (optional) you will experience Vienna’s most famous examples of architecture: the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephens Cathedral, the gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard and the State Opera House, the Burgtheater and town hall and, of course, the colorful "Hundertwasserhaus". Take time to relax in one or more of Vienna’s famous cafés, while the evening ends impressively at a classical concert (optional) in one of Vienna‘s most famous palaces.

      From your bike you will experience all those famous sights from a new and completely different point of view.  Some of the highlights are: the State Opera, the Johann Strauß Monument, the Hofburg - the Habsburg family's winter residence, and St. Stephan’s Cathedral, Vienna’s most famous landmark. Easy route on bike paths or streets with little traffic. Frequent stops for taking pictures! The tour ends at St. Stephan´s Cathedral.

      Get to know the most significant sights and highlights of Vienna. To get the best possible impression of this wonderful metropole you will discover the historic centre by foot.

      Enjoy a concert in the location that Mozart returned to time and again throughout his career: The Schoenbrunn Palace’s Orangery. The Orangery was often used for pompous celebrations during Imperial times. The most famous melodies by Mozart and Strauß presented by the renowned Schoenbrunn Palace Festival Orchestra, accompanied by virtuoso vocals and dance fascinate the guests every evening anew.

    Day 7: Wachau / Krems - Melk, approx. 37 km

    Your last biking day is a special highlight! A powerful ruin looms above the small Baroque town of Durnstein, while the blue spire of the monastery church is a landmark of the renowned Wachau. Amidst dreamy towns, apricot trees, vineyards and castles, this hilly landscape enchants everybody who visits ... you will be biking on cloud nine! In Weißenkirchen (possibility to do a wine-tasting – optional) you will find comfortable wine taverns along the bike path. After the Captain’s farewell dinner, lots of fun and entertainment can be experienced during the popular crew show.

      The Wachau Valley is Austria’s most famous wine region along the Danube River. In the historical "Salzstadl" (storage for salt) dating back to 17th century you will learn more about, and taste local white wines (Grüner Vetliner, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc), and a local Red wines (Zweigelt). Served with brown bread from the village's bakery.

    Day 8: Passau

    As you cruise back up the Danube, enjoy the early morning sunshine as you wind your way to Passau, where you will disembark at about 10:00 am. Connecting travel should not be booked earlier than 11.00 am..

    Important Information:

    In case of flood or low tide the shipping company reserves the right to bridge parts of passages with buses. In extreme case  the shipping company reserves the right to cancel the journey on short notice. No legal right shall be constituted of both situations. (Water level is force majeure).  The same applies for officially ordered – previously not announced – repair work on locks or bridges or in case of undeserved breakdown of engine and power unit. Please be aware that your ship, like all other ships on the Danube, is not only your hotel but also a machine, working with engine power also during night. Especially crossing locks and bridges – and the preparation work – might cause noises. If you are sensitive to noises, please bring your own earplugs.

As buses cannot reach pier 1 or 2 you will get off at Römerplatz (pier 5) and have to walk the last meters (walking distance approx. 4-5 min.). Your luggage will be delivered seperately by minibus directly to the ship.

    Passau is connected with the regional and intercity trafficnet of the Deutschen Bahn (german train). Main train station is reachable - depending on the ship landing stage of the ship - between 2-6 km. You´ll find taxis at the Airport exit. No liability for any delays. Please be informed that seat reservations can only be done via Deutsche Bahn AG (f.i. via webpage >>www.bahn.de)  or in your travel agency.

    Airport: Munich (MUC) or Vienna (VIE)

    Passau is reachable within about 2 1/2 hours by public transportation from Munich (bus + train).
    You’ll need to take a 20-minute bus ride from the airport to the Freising station (they leave at 21 after each hour), connecting with a train from Freising to Passau (about 1 hour, 45 minutes).

    SHIP LANDING STAGES/ EMBARKATION PASSAU

    Passau has two different ship landing stages. One right at the old town at the Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade/Untere Donauländer and another one at the outside of Passau in Lindau at Franz-Weismann-Straße. The harbor authority is in charge for the division of the ship landing stages and can even be changed on the day of arrival.     DISEMBARKATION PASSAU/ Transfer to main train station

    Please note, that after the arrival in Passau – the ship must be towed according to directions safely and secure – then the crew will bring the luggage off board (duration approx. 1 hour). Please calculate delays caused by high-/low water resp. delays in locks. We recommend not to book train tickets too close to the estimated time of arrival the ship in Passau. We cannot refund any occurring extra costs. Taxis will also be waiting for all leaving guests. Further information will be given on board from our cruise director.

    Individual Cyclingtour: You´ll receive a detailed roadbook with maps and infomation to the routing on board.
    You do not cycle in a group – you cycle individually in your own tempo and are therefor able to time your day to your needs. Only the schedule gives you a time frame.
    Our cruise director explains the evening before the next cycling path in the daily breefings and inform you about the specifics and gives tipps about sightseeing, possibilities to take a rest and specialities.
    If you do not want to cycle, just stay on board and enjoy the passing landscape on the sun deck or relax in the infrared cabin. The crew is trying to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

    Standard, Comfort or Luxury ? On the MV Carissima YOU have the choice

    All 75 de-luxe staterooms have 14 m² and feature a hotel-style double bed, which may be converted to two single beds. The half-height windows on the Main deck cannot be opened, the staterooms on the Upper and Middle deck provide full-size picture windows which do open. All cabins are equipped with a private bathroom with a shower, hair dryer, TV, safe and full air-conditioning. ECO cabins are located in the front/rear part of the ship (engine noise possible).

In the Panorama-Lounge, where the bar is located, you can enjoy a glass of wine with your new friends and travel mates while the gorgeous landscape is passing by. Comfortable lounge chairs and discreet colors make you stay a little longer…

    After an exciting day of cycling you can relax in the spa with sauna and whirlpool. For pleasant refreshment, jump into the pool (June-August) on the sun deck, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view. And if you are in the mood for reading, just borrow a book in the library! The comfortable ship will make your journey unforgettable. Wifi is available on board (payable on spot, connection can vary).


    Restaurant / Kitchen

    The full board consists of: breakfast, packed lunch for bikers (resp. light meal for guests on board), dinner. On 4 evenings you have the choice between 2-3 menus. Not claimed meals cannot be refunded. Your table number will be provided during boarding. Special meals have to be ordered latest by 3 weeks prior departure.


    Board- und Excursionprogram

    A musician will provide evening entertainment. On the last evening the crew invites you to an evening of entertainment, good mood and fun!
    Excursions can only be booked on board with our cruise director.


    Laundry Service

    Put your clothes-to-wash in the plastic bag that you find in your cabin. After the next cabin service the housekeeping staff will take your clothes to the laundry and bring it back the day after. Further information and prices at the reception directly on board.


    Drinks / Beverages

    Drink prices: softdrinks € 2,75, beer from € 2,90, coffee € 2,50, Gin/Vodka € 2,75, wine from €3,95/glass, Digestiv/Likör from €4,00, Cocktails € 8,50. subject to changes.

    Guests may bring onboard one 750 ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne per person in their carry-on luggage during embarkation day or purchased in ports.
    A corkage fee will be charged should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the dining room, bar or any other public area (sundeck, pool, library, ..)


    Internet / Mobile phone

    If you want to be reachable on board in urgent cases, please leave our office number at your family. We will forward you the message as soon as possible. The ship also offers Wi-Fi (chargeable). We only have very limited internet connections on board. If possible we send urgent E-Mails for you.


    Life on board

    There is no special dress code on board. Casual clothing is sufficient. For the concert and the gala dinner some passengers are dressed more elegant. We suggest appropriate clothing for the bike-tours as e.g. cycling pants, bike-gloves, sportive shoes, etc…sun- and rain protection – please don’t forget! A warm sweater for rather cool evenings on deck. Swim wear for using the opportunity on hot days along your bike-leg.


    Medical care

    For emergency cases doctors are also shortly available ashore.


    Smoking on board

    Please note that the whole ship (incl. cabins, restaurant, café) is absolutely a non smoking area. Smoking is allowed only on the open sundeck.


    Tipping

    For anyone who has taken a mainstream cruise before, the subject of tipping is a common one; after all, the wonderful service you’re treated to for an entire week an equally suitable reward.
    Towards the end of the cruise you will find an envelope in your cabin . This will allow you to place cash into the unmarked envelope. The cash needs to be Euros. You can then place it in a box near reception.  This form of giving a tip is useful to credit all crew-members.
    A noncommittal directive would be approx. € 7,- to 9,- per person and day.
    The cruise director is not included in this system. If you have been satisfied with his work during the week – there will be also a tip box available directly at the cruise director’s desk.


    Currency/ Payment

    All prices are in EURO. With each order you receive a receipt to sign.
    The invoice can be paid in cash or with credit card (VISA or Master Card) on the day of departure at the reception.
    Excursions  have to be paid directly at the cruise director (credit card accepted).

    Our bicycles are modern and high stardard quality of KTM. We offer 28-Zoll-Unisex-tourbikes with deep comfort-entrance. The bikes are equipped with 21-derailleur-gear with override, caliper breaks and robust wheels. Our bicycles are mostly not older than 3 years.

    Electric bikes | E-Bikes | Pedelecs
    You will receive modern high quality E-Bikes of the brands Flyer/Kalkhoff and KTM with 8-gearhub, individual regulated use of support of pedal-use, robust wheels and deep Unisex comfort entrance. The bikes have a strong Panasonic Pedelec-mechanism and a strong licium-ionen-battery. The batteries lasts up to 70 kilometres, depending on sort of cycling, weight and routing. The more hills to go, the heavier the weight, the more accucapacity will be used. You can regulate range of the battery if you use less support at the beginning
    and raise it if needed. Batteries will be loaded with the battery recharger by night in your room.

    ATTENTION: Please pre-book your E-bike early enough as we have restricted availability of approx. 12-15 E-bikes/ship.


    Bike breakdown
    Can also occur with very new and good bikes. A puncture of the wheel will be fixed by yourself, for bigger damages please contact your cruise director. Please do not make any repair-service without our agreement on our bikes. For smaller technical problems with the bike please contact the cruise director or a member of the crew at the end of the bike-leg.


    Private Bikes
    You are welcome to bring your own bicycle. This is adapted especially to your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival. You will receive
    on board a pannier for your bike.

    Bikes will mostly be brought on/off board by the ship crew. Please note that we are not liable in case of damage.
    Due to organizational reasons (anchor second row) bikes will be partly left outside in front of the ship. Bicycles are exposed to the weather on board as the parking space is not covered. Storage of bikes inside the ship is not possible. The bicycle storage possibilities are restricted therefore the bikes will be transported close to each other or in a lying position. Please therefore remove all additional tools.

    The only problem we had was getting to the boat from the hotel with our bikes. The taxi’s would not take them and there was no bigger shuttle available. I had to ride them over and run back to the hotel to get the second one.
