Danube Cycle Path 3-Country-Tour / Vienna - Budapest

    Vienna - Bratislava - Budapest

    • WBI3LAOn this classic cycle tour you will experience the diverse natural beauty of the Danube and will visit three of the most important cities situated along the Danube - Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. All three cities – the capitals of Austria, Slovakia and Hungary - boast intriguing histories dating back to pre-Roman times and are must-see destinations during the tour. Over the course of the eight day cycle tour you will discover and learn about the intriguing history of the ever-changing Danube and the landscape that it traverses. Highlights include: a visit to the Castle of Eckartsau in Austria, the residence of the last Austrian Emperor Karl I and his wife Empress Zita before they were exiled to the Portuguese island of Madeira in November 1921. In Bratislava: St. Martin’s Cathedral where the coronation of Hungarian Kings took place between 1563 and 1860; in Esztergom in Hungary where King Stephen, the first Hungarian king, was born and accepted his coronation and in Budapest where Empress Sissi of Austria was also crowned Queen of Hungary in 1867. All of this plus much, much more will certainly make for a trip of a lifetime.

      Tour profile

The tour is mostly flat with rolling hills that are sometimes slightly steep. The Austrian section follows well maintained and equipped cycle paths, in Hungary you will often cycle on quiet country backroads. On entering and leaving cities there is, of course, traffic that must be observed!

      Day 1: Vienna

Individual arrival in Vienna. (Tip: use low-cost carriers to Vienna/Bratislava). Tonight the evening belongs to you! Why not enjoy a spectacular stroll through the imperial city or visit a typical Viennese tavern with local foods and goodies‚ a so-called Heurigen? The possibilities are endless in the ‘City of Waltz‘.

      Nick and Bernadette’s Cycle Holiday--Vienna-Budapest

It was a ride down memory lane for me. I did the same cycle tour in the early 1990s with Rad and Reisen as part of a UK journalists tour paid for by R&R to promote what was then a newly formed cycle holiday company. I had forgotten how beautiful the Danube ...

      Biking with my teenage kids

We all had an excellent time during our Vienna to Budapest bike. The biking is not too difficult as the route has no big hills and it is not too far each day, but we still got great exercise and the shower at the end of the biking day felt great. Most ...

The road book needs to be updated for this tour. Due to updates in the roads and the Danube cycle path, the directions in the book do not match the roads/cycle path in Hungary and Slovakia.
