Romantic Road I

Würzburg - Rothenburg

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile Level 1-2

For the most part, the route runs on small, quiet, paved roads, sometimes on paved bike paths or on sandy roads. Between Würzburg and the Tauber Valley, you have to reckon with gradients. The Tauber Valley itself is again flat, with slight inclines.

Day 1: Würzburg

Individual arrival in the Franconian residential city of Würzburg, the starting point of your journey. Great artists such as Balthasar Neumann, Tilman Riemenschneider and Tiepolo worked here. Enjoy the flair of the city, which is so attractively situated between the vineyards on the banks of the Main, and get to know the Franconian zest for life in one of the wine taverns.

Day 2: Würzburg – Wertheim, approx. 45 km

You leave Würzburg through the Steinbachtal valley and cycle through small villages, following the course of the Aalbach. You finally reach the Main at Bettingen. Now it is only a few kilometers to Wertheim. This small town between Spessart and Odenwald is picturesquely situated at the confluence of the Tauber and the Main. The beautiful castle ruins tower over the small winding streets of the old town. Enjoy the evening in the romantic atmosphere of the medieval town.

Day 3: Wertheim – Bad Mergentheim, approx. 50 km

Today you leave the Main and continue cycling in the Tauber Valley. Here, the unspoilt natural experience is combined with the art-historical testimonies of a 1000-year history. Soon after, you will reach Tauberbischofsheim. The Kurmainzische Schloss with its thick walls and the Türmersturm is an imposing testimony. Numerous monuments reflect the different eras. From now on, follow the Romantic Road to Bad Mergentheim, where you will spend the night.

Day 4: Bad Mergentheim – Rothenburg ob der Tauber, approx. 55 km

First on the program is the small spa town of Bad Mergentheim. Then you can visit the moated castle of Weikersheim. Via Creglingen, where you will find the Marienaltar (altarpiece) by Tilman Riemenschneider, you will finally cycle through the unspoiled Tauber Valley towards Rothenburg. Shortly before midnight, the Rothenburg night watchman will tell you stories about the medieval life of the city on his tour (included).

Day 5: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Individual departure from Rothenburg or extension.

Romantic road on e-bikes

The trip was excellent and very enjoyable. Two minor points worth mentioning are: We had some difficulty interpreting the trip notes in towns to find our hotels; and given we are older riders we did look for lifts in hotels to help with luggage. The bikes ...
